Another repeat of a request

Oh, I see, it isn’t swearing in the content of the page, it’s swearing in <title> can’t swear here </title>, what shows up in the big blue strip at the very top, right?

In which case my point is invalidated

That’s one point of view. The other is: if the SDMB as a whole (The Pit being the obvious exception) is worksafe enough that people feel the need to put “warning: TMI” or “warning: NSFW” in their thread titles, why does the whole thing need to become NSFW simply because of the thread titles of an area you might not even be looking at?

Nobody puts warnings in Pit threads. It’s well known that you takes your chances when you come in this area when it comes to inappropriate content.

Smurf that!

Would you like us to all drive in the right hand lane so you can get to work faster too?

OR how about you ask your boss to get the IT people to add the Straight Dope to the exception list. Ya know, instead of asking 5000+ people to accommodate you. You do something about it. Perhaps you could post in General Questions about the ability to suppress the title bar. That’s just off the top of my head. Surely you’ll be able to come up with even better ideas since you have more knowledge of the situation.

<sigh> Hence my “the Pit being the obvious exception” comment.

Right, but I thought the rest of your post was trying to argue that the Pit should be like the other areas. Maybe I misunderstood.

The rest of my post was arguing that the main page is NSFW (by some people’s standards) even though they are being careful to avoid the only portion of the board that is supposed to be NSFW.

I still stand by my feeling that it’s simply politeness to keep thread titles worksafe, while swearing as much as you want within the thread itself. I think it’s childish to consider that a stifling of expression, any more than any polite deference to mature discourse is considered unconsitutional.

No one is arguing for repression; only for a one-click consideration, simply out of politeness, not censorship.

I’d prefer that Clothahump stop posting on the SDMB. Instead, he could just post links to another website where he can put his thoughts and opinions.

It’s only one-click consideration. And his views would still be out there, so we’re not talking censorship.

Sound good?

-Joe

Wow… Just… wow.

It was a simple request. If you don’t want to help the guy out, don’t. He didn’t ask for a new rule or to have the mods change offending titles. He asked for people to consider the fact that he can’t read threads with swear words in the titles.

Lighten up, Francis(es).

Huh? I think you’re mixing your meds. Either that or just a liar. You know damn well that nothing that’s been suggested has any parallel with the bizarre hallucinations you’re sharing with us.

It’s not an uneasonable request, I think. I’ll try to remember to make my titles work-safe, but I’m afraid I’ll likely forget.

He’s neither drugged up, nor lying. I’m not even sure how you could get ‘lying’ out of that, anyways. He was just saying that he doesn’t like Humpy, and would be happy if Humpy wasn’t posting here. In the process of saying that, he aped the form of your suggestion.

It was a joke.

Ahh…and as we all know the best jokes are the ones that require an explanation three times the length of the joke!

Mission Accomplished! Woo!

-Joe, has no meds except for Zycam (Zyrtec? Whatever the allergy one is)

Huh. Good thing it wasn’t a suggestion that polite titles equals banning free speech and kicking members you don’t like off the board. I’m trying to figure out one word, one letter, he’d need to change in order to make it NOT a joke, and I’m not finding one. I’m not a huge fan of smileys, but if the only way to get that a post is a joke is to be intimately familiar with the two posters’ mutual and respective histories, well then I’m gonna call it a failed joke.

Merijeek, as I explained earlier, the little old ladies that run our IT department have filters in place that block pages with certain words in them. Since I tend to peruse the SDMB while I have long jobs running, I can’t open a lot of interesting looking threads because of the language in the titles. And I’m sure I’m not the only person in this boat.

That’s all.

I don’t know if you’re allowed to use Firefox, but something like this might be worth looking into.

I think this is a reasonable request, as long as it remains a request and not a rule.

FinnAgain- aren’t these 'joke" things supposed to be “funny”?

You mean for example, if I said FUCK clothahump, he wouldn’t be able to read it at work?
