Hmmm…1963 to 1969. That was the period in which the counterculture revolution, with it’s concomitant drug use and skyrocketing criminality, took root and flourished, yes, no?

Still, that cite proves nothing other than that lots of people own guns and use 'em to kill people more than with other weapons. Is there anyone bright enough to be reading this board who didn’t already know this?

And yes, guns are primarily the weapons used in cop killings. And by whom exactly are cops being killed? Yep, criminals! The very same people who will be the only ones who have guns once the government manages to make them illegal. I haven’t heard a single peep anywhere from the liberatti as to just how they intend to keep illegal guns out of the hands of criminals, and I’ve said many times that I’d be more amenable to gun control should a believably effective plan be put forth as to how to achieve this. But crickets is all I hear, and you know why? Because there is no way to make sure criminals won’t have guns once they’ve been been made illegal. “When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns” may be something liberals like to mock just like they like to mock ‘Won’t somebody think of the children’ but both are valid concerns among those nor enmeshed in the allure of the drugs, sex and rock n’ roll lifestyle.

Any cop will tell you that cooperation from the public is the only reason laws are obeyed, that if everyone in society decided all at once to start ignoring stop signs and traffic lights and began robbing each other, the police would be utterly powerless to stop it. The fact that our society is as orderly and safe as it is, is the result of society as a whole accepting the benefit of certain ways of behaving and adhering to those standards. And to the degree they do everyone else follows suit, usually without even thinking about it. That is how society in this country used to be. People behaved because everyone else did. (And spare me the rare exception that proves nothing.) People obeyed the law because that’s what people did. They coped with adversity because that’s what people did. They disciplined their children and made sure they behaved and hopefully did well in school because that’s what people did. And they didn’t shoot up schools because that’s not what people did.

Now it’s like half the country has decided they no longer have to obey the rules of the road and the chaos that life in the U.S. has become is the result of that. Kids can’t be disciplined by either their parents or their schools, drugs are everywhere, 7-11s sell women’s magazines in plain view whose covers extoll the proper way to give blowjobs, everybody in the country is a victim, which is no surprise since victimhood serves both as an excuse for a crappily lived life and to bestow undeserved moral superiority. It’s like a Get Out Of Jail Free card for responsibility. And with victimhood comes an inability to cope with the fact that things happen in life that you don’t like or that make you feel bad about yourself and you come to feel the whole world is against you. So you become a ne’er do well living in your parents’ basement playing video games all day or you go shoot up a school.

The fabric of society was as it was in the 50s and 60s because it had evolved that way organically and stood the test of time. It had its problems and its flaws but nothing is perfect and it served to keep everyone on the same page and society functioning smoothly. And now the peace and love that the counterculture crowd foolishly foresaw has turned into a seething mass of divisiveness and groups that hate each other for having ‘victimized’ someone with everyone jostling to out-virtue signal each other and find some way to call everyone else an asshole.

This country is a fucking mess, and like I said upthread, it’s not only gonna get worse it’s going to get a hell of a lot worse before society finally comes to the realization that a society ruled by whim, shortsightedness, irresponsibility, anger and alienation cannot hold together and begins acting like grown ups again.

The US had a higher rate of children being killed or injured by guns _ **than the 12 other countries combined** _. Think of the children! Give 'em all guns, and bring 'em up right!

So what? They don’t have the history and other societal problems we do, which includes a heavily armed underclass of criminals. Like I said in the post just above, show me how you’ll keep guns out of the hands of criminals and then we can talk about gun control. I won’t expect to hear back in this or anyone else’s lifetime.

Once he really did have to draw on an armed intruder to save his life. Awakened by negro voices asking if this was number 4 and the smell of marihuana he reached under his pillow and spun around pointing a soggy paper towel tube at the shadowy figures in his train car. The intruders fled laughing hysterically, probably high on PCP, and he changed his soiled underwear. That tube probably saved his life and that of his young travelling companion, a high school football champion on his way to a Penn State recruitment weekend.

This kind of narrative had some legitimate factual bite during the Reagan/Gingrich conservative backlash era. But since then, things have turned around dramatically, yet people like you have no fucking clue. From an article aptly titled [Perceptions Haven’t Caught Up to Decline in Crime:](https://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/17/upshot/perceptions-havent-caught-up-to-decline-in-crime.html)

> [@](#):
>
> The decline in violent crime is one of the most striking trends over recent decades; the rate has declined roughly by half since 1993.
>
> To be precise, the F.B.I.'s count of violent crimes reported to law enforcement has declined from a rate of 747 violent incidents per 100,000 people in 1993 to 387 incidents per 100,000 people in 2012, which is the most recent year for which it has published complete data. This reflects the fact that over this period, the homicide rate has fallen by 51 percent; forcible rapes have declined by 35 percent; robberies have decreased by 56 percent; and the rate of aggravated assault has been cut by 45 percent. Property crime rates are also sharply down.[…]
>
> These trends aren’t caused by changes in our willingness to report crime to the police. We see an even more significant decline in violent crime in data derived from surveys asking people whether they’ve been the victims of certain crimes over the past year. The National Crime Victimization Survey reports that the rate of violent victimizations has declined by 67 percent since 1993. This reflects a 70 percent decline in rape and sexual assault; a 66 percent decline in robbery; a 77 percent decline in aggravated assault; and a 64 percent decline in simple assault.

Missed the edit window, but wanted to add:

I mentioned Gingrich. He took a disturbingly Orwellian approach to this disconnect between facts and perception on crime during the Trump campaign:

“The average American, I will bet you this morning, does not think that crime is down, does not think that we are safer. People feel more threatened. As a political candidate, I’ll go with what people feel.”

Again, meaningless. Crime skyrocketed in the wake of the counterculture revolution, and now, 50 years later, it’s only now beginning to approach the level it was in 1960. Fifty years of high crime is not a throw away, and the present rate of decline doesn’t make it so.

There can be many reasons why crime is going down, but I can guarantee you none of them have anything to do with liberal influence on society. Three strikes laws and no federal parole likely play a significant role, as does the fact that people previously living in high crime areas have been moving to other parts of town the last few decades and bring with them young people still predisposed to crime but finding it harder to pull off in the suburbs. And then there’s the fact that…wait for it…many people are armed now that many states have passed open or concealed carry laws. Nogoodniks are having to think twice about accosting people in their homes or cars because they might just get shot.

As I said, crime is more widespread now, and while this may make crime harder to commit and get away with, it does go on more than it did previously. So both the perception (and the reality for those living in formerly safe areas) is that crime is not down. It might be down overall but it’s not down where they live. Capisce??

You’re mixing different things in meaningless ways. What are career criminals going to do with the weapons of mass slaughter that are used to commit these massacres like the one in Florida? And how are you going to defend yourself against them with such a weapon?

No, if you’re afraid of urban crime - a threat that’s been receding for over a quarter-century now - your best bet is a handgun. If you want a handgun to protect your home and loved ones within from the nonexistent criminal hordes, knock yourself out AFAIAC. But nobody in civilian life in the United States of America needs weapons that are designed to kill lots of people real fast. Not even the criminals! Only those unhinged and violent people who want to go out in a blaze of destruction, taking as many lives with them as possible.

It’s not something the government should be involved in. Infringement on freedom, etc.

On a semi-related note, I’m curious how many Republicans are calling this an issue of mental illness and not guns but would, if asked, call for the shooter to get the death penalty.

If you want to complain about the inadequacies of the terminologies, fine, I’m with you, but you also have to become a bigger person and address the historical context for why they exist, (rather than just latch onto it as a convenience for throwing out perceived slights), and that’s not really the focus of this thread.

[How a generation of American children grew up expecting to be shot by other children](https://a.msn.com/r/2/BBJb2dP?m=en-us)

Were you afraid of this when you were in grade/high school? Did it even cross your mind when you grabbed your lunch and went out the door? Did it cross your parents’ minds? In another post I noted that one of the kids in Florida had been sent to school by his cop dad with a bulletproof vest. One assumes the boy took it with him every day. One day ne needed it.

For those here who say that coverage of these now weekly shootings is hype and PR, I ask, “What if they become daily?”

> [@](#):
>
> In my lifetime American children being murdered at school by their fellow students has become an almost unremarkable occurrence.
>
> How did this happen? When Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 of their classmates and one teacher in Columbine, Colorado, [1999] it was a generation-defining moment, like the assassination of President Kennedy.
> …
> We are not living in the more innocent world of 1999. Events like Wednesday’s massacre in Florida, where at least 17 people were murdered at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, are not fantastically remote contingencies. Columbine unfolded on television, but most of us saw only its aftermath. It was unthinkable for those who survived it and those who only experienced it as a media event.
>
> The bloodbath at Marjory Stoneman Douglas was live-tweeted. The students who took part in it seemed to recognize that they were participating in a familiar ritual of American life. They understood that what was happening was something called a “school shooting,” an event with known conditions and procedures and conventions, something that has happened 230 times in this country since 2013. School shootings are now weekly rather than epochal events.
>
> How, I ask once more, did this happen? How is it possible that something as evil as a school child taking the lives of several of his classmates — an event entirely without precedent in the history of this country and with few parallels abroad, even in nations in the midst of civil war — has become more routine than elections or the Super Bowl?
> …
> There are two parts to this riddle. One is why these slaughters have continued to occur, why, indeed, it would seem to be the case that they are becoming more frequent even as murder rates fall across the country. The other is why or how it has become possible for us to conceive of them not as hideous aberrations that defy cataloguing or description but as a genre.
> …
> The fact that in America children have grown up thinking of it as a televisual ceremony is, in its way, almost as gruesome as the murders themselves.

\*\*Correct. \*\* You have right free speech, but slander and libel are still not acceptable. You have a right to own guns, but not an unlimited right to nuclear weapons, IEDs, and machine guns - or to start threatening and/or killing anyone. You have a right (not really but a license) to drive a car but it can be revoked. You have a right to “free travel” but there are still restricted areas you can’t go into. You have a right to personal freedom until you are convicted of a felony.

Etc etc etc.

It’s no wonder this fucker supported Trump.
>
> Trump himself has come up with a brilliant solution to the problem (because, just like **SA** , he is a genius): since the killer was a known troublemaker, he should have been reported. Problem solved! This is how all of these idiots create the politically expedient delusion that “guns are not the problem”.

Trump never said shit about this shooter being an “alt right” Nazi, or that he was a Trump fanboy - with a MAGA hat and everything. “Good people on both sides”. Etc. He did get in the above remark blaming the victims. Because white Nazi child killing Trumpies are “the good people” of course.

> That doesn’t even rise to the caliber of idea. It’s simply stupid. In the heat of the immediate moment, you might believe schools are active combat zones, but the fact remains that they are not. Also, school districts already hire people with training for law enforcement. Now, that is a credible idea.

Guess what? Schools ARE active zones. Why, you ask? Because they are widely advertised as being GUN-FREE, which translates into TARGET-RICH ENVIRONMENT. Why do you think so many shooters go after schools in the first place?

Nobody likes school shootings, so let’s do something positive about the problem instead of running around like Chicken Little and clucking about banning guns and ammunition. Some states already are doing something positive: [https://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2013/07/30/at-least-7-states-now-have-armed-staff-in-schools](https://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2013/07/30/at-least-7-states-now-have-armed-staff-in-schools)

I presume they go after schools because they’re looking for maximum notoriety and fame through the shocking slaughter of innocents, and perhaps because in the case of ex pupils they may have a number of perceived slights/grudges they’re looking to settle.

But I do like your attempt at victim blaming. Those kids were asking for it, going around all unarmed and vulnerable. Bitches were practically begging for it.
