I was just thinking that it would be interesting if someone set up a variation of this thread where people could voice their unpopular opinions on political and social issues anonymously. I mention it because a lot of the posts in this thread veered in that direction but I think it could merit its own thread. I don’t have enough SDMB time to be the middleman though - but if someone wants to jump in… ---

I’m pretty liberal but I hold some opinions that I would have to vigorously defend if I voiced them. And I don’t have the time or energy for that kind of extended debate, and I know I’m not going to change anyone’s mind. So sometimes I will read certain threads and roll my eyes without ever posting and there are some threads I just don’t even read. But the opinions I do voice are genuine. ---

There are all manner of secrets… Big ones, small ones, personal ones, professional ones. Sometimes, there are things that aren’t really “secret” as much as they are “private” for fear of public mocking. Although I, like most people, have secrets that fit into all of the above, I think I’ll reveal one of the latter. Anyone who knows me already knows this fact… and most of them hound me relentlessly about it. I try to let it go unsaid just to avoid the inevitable conflict. But, I’m not backing away. So, here goes: I like bologna sandwiches. I am _plenty_ old enough to have moved past peer pressure. I like them. That’s all. According to the masses, bologna sandwiches are evil for the following reasons: 1. they are associated with being poor. I couldn’t care less. I grew up poor enough to appreciate having food available. I certainly don’t mind being associated with poor people. Most of my relatives are poor. Thinking less of poor people never made sense. Money should not be equated with success. 2. They are made of lips and assholes. Wrong. But, even if it’s true, I don’t care. 3. They are associated with black people. Once again, I couldn’t care less. I drink Kool-Aid. I eat bologna & watermelon & fried chicken & BBQ. Also, loads of various ethnic foods. That doesn’t associate me with them. But, even if it were true, I wouldn’t care in the slightest. I live among black people & never have any white fear. Elvis didn’t care, so why should I? 4. eating meat, of any kind, is bad. People have always been omnivores & always will be. Maybe that’s just not right, but it is what it is. At least I’m helping to eat the lips & assholes that would otherwise go to waste. ---

NEW SECRET I have a friend who is a tour manager for some big acts. When he comes through my town he usually comes for dinner and I sometimes I see the shows with by best friend. He leaves tickets for us at ‘will call’. We usually wave to each other, sometimes have a quick chat only, while at the show. He is understandably quite busy at such times. Well, this time it was with the last act, at a several day festival, so there was no ‘will call’, as such. We were instructed to wait at the backstage access point, and that’s where he met us. We were given full access passes and VIP bracelets. Wandered about with the bands back stage, even hung out with them at their trailers when a brief rain fell! Then we watched the final band from THE best seat in the house, dead centre with the mixing board! Even got to see the backstage after antics, it was such a blast. We were just expecting to get in for free, so we’re we’re blown away It was an amazing way to experience such an event, (of which I attended many in my misspent youth!) It was like someone pulled back the curtain on The Wizard of Oz, suddenly you get to see what goes on behind the curtain! An unexpectedly great adventure. I REALLY wish I could say more. ---

Something similar happened to me, a long time ago. August 18th 1983 to be exact. The concert was The Police / Synchronicity Tour and the venue was Shea Stadium. The opening acts were REM and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Needless to say this concert was a very big deal and IIRC, it had been sold out for forever. At the time I worked for a company that rented out lighting and special effects equipment. On the day of the concert, a couple of roadies from the show came into our place looking to rent two chemical fog machines to soup up the special effects. But they hit a snag. They were leaving town right after the show and wouldn’t have a way to return the machines . Now these machines can be hand carried, they are about the size and shape of a smallish toolbox, only boxier. So they came up with this plan where they would give two willing employees full access backstage passes for the show and they would be welcome to come early, hang out and watch the show from backstage. In return, all they had to do was each take home a fog machine and bring it to work with them the next day. So I was one of the lucky two…I don’t really remember how they picked who got to go – I think they picked me because I was a vocal fan and my crush on Sting was not a secret. But it was a totally freaking awesome experience that I will always remember. ---

And every night at 9, when I watch Chris Hayes hand off the programming to Rachael Maddow, I sort of start thinking that maybe Chris was born female and Rachael was born male. NEW SECRET I stole about $2,000 cash from my job as closing manager at a restaurant. It was my last day. I was responsible for counting the day’s take, bundling it with paperwork showing the amount and other numbers, and putting the bundle into the safe. I put it in my backpack instead. I got away with it. This was about 37 years ago. I was a young kid and it was a dumb thing to do. ---

NEW SECRET My initial sexual experiences were at the age of 13 or 14 and incestual, with my sister who is a couple years older. It was completely consensual and non-penetrative, mainly mutual masturbation. It just ended one day after a few months and we never spoke of it since. I’ve never told anyone in fact and doubt she has either (we’re middle aged now and both long since married). It never bothered me that it happened and, if I think about it, I suppose I find it more disturbing that I’m not disturbed. I’m not in favor of the behavior and would honestly say “Ew” like anyone else if I heard about it from anyone else but my own experience is just compartmented off. My two cents? It says that you are a normal healthy human being with normal healthy urges. We all know that the fires burn incredibly brightly when we first hit puberty. I wouldn’t read anything more into it than that. If you have a good relationship with your sister that is loving and supportive now then I would say it doesn’t really matter what happened back then. NEW SECRET I don’t post on the Dope any more but the odds are very good that you knew me at least by reputation when I did. I have not had sex in about five years and it is more or less guaranteed that I will never have sex again, although I am still under sixty. You can thank an incurable disorder of the penis for that. I’ve researched possible surgery and so on and it doesn’t seem to be worth going ahead with. As far as I can tell, my wife is perfectly OK with the idea of never having sex again, if not positively pleased that at last it gets to be someone else’s fault. Ah well. Mustn’t grumble!
