# Another T-shirt thread (probably for Dex).

We had [another t-shirt thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=255075) recently, but it didn’t address my concern.
I had looked several times before at buying a Straight Dope t-shirt, and was always thwarted by the _Reader_’s commerce pages failing to accept AMEX. Then hope appeared, as when I subscribed, I was able to do so with my AMEX.
But recent checking of the commerce pages reveals no AMEX option. I wonder, then, is this just an oversight? Now that the _Reader_ has obviously established a relationship with AMEX, would it be possible to soon acquire SD goodies with an AMEX?

I think that the subscriptions are handled via PayPal, whether directly or indirectly. That is to say, the Reader has a business relationship with PayPal, and PayPal has a relationship with American Express, and via this connection, it is possible to subscribe using AmEx. But the Reader does not have a business relationship directly with American Express, and the “Buy Stuff” page is handled completely differently from the subscription model, so the connection with PayPal is not relevant.
At least, I think that’s what’s going on. But I’m just another nobody (at least so far as this is concerned), so I may well be mistaken.

I think you got it, Chronos; two entirely different payment plans and mechanisms in place here.
I’ll ask to see if they can add Amex to the Straight Dope Store; they do accept Amex elsewhere on the Straight Dope pages.
