Back when no one was certain where the Manitoba-Ontario border was, both provinces established police departments in Kenora, who instead of working together got it in their heads to arrest each other, resulting in most officers of both forces either being locked up in jail or hiding out in hopes of not being arrested. Unfortunately, this left the town without any effective law enforcement despite having two police forces. Also, you’ve heard of the expression “vote early and vote often” – well when it came time for the provincial elections, everyone got to vote twice, due to their residing in two provinces at one time.

According to discussions on this very topic with Brits the argument seems to be that some good old fashioned assaults are no biggie as long as fists are involved, ditto for muggings. But you Americans are crazy and have to bring GUNS into it.

The truth or which is better is debatable.

But Ravenman, you’re cite uses more recent data that shows a significant decrease since the peak in 2004, whereas Drunky Smurf’s cite uses dated data to show the increase but not the more recent decrease. Shouldn’t we use the more traditional, well established data rather than something that is more accurate?

The number of firearm offences has fallen steadily since peaking at 24,094 in 2003/04, and has decreased by over half (53%) since then. This represents a greater fall than in police recorded crime overall, which has fallen by around a third (31%) over the same period (Table 2.04 in Chaplin et al., 2011). This decrease in firearm offences has largely been due to a reduction in the number of air weapon offences recorded by the police, which has fallen by over two-thirds (69%) since 2003/04. In comparison, non-air weapon offences are almost a third (32%) lower than 2003/04, having peaked later, in 2005/06 (Table 2.01; Figure 2.1).
