If white engineers are predisposed to hiring only their white buddies but they tell everyone who complains about it that they are only hire the best candidates, then there is a major problem. And that’s what’s wrong with the Oscars. It’s a popularity contest masquerading as a merit-based competition. The popularity is heavily skewed towards white people, telling white stories. But when people complain about this, instead of getting an honest answer like, “White people prefer white people, sorry!” they are told “You aren’t good enough!! Try harder next time!!” Hell yes it’s racism. ---

Something like 2/3 of the movie goers in the US are white. Around 10-11% are black. The rest are mainly Hispanic and other races. Discriminatory practices are permitted when hiring actors, primarily because of the _ **bona fide occupational qualification** _. If the role calls for a white male age 35-45, then they are permitted to select under that criteria. Screenplays and scripts are selected for production that studios believe will sell tickets. Remember the audience breakdown above. ---
