> A daily game that challenges our understanding of human cultures. Ten objects. 5,000 years of human history. Guess where and when each artifact was made. See how you rank.

Each day it gives you ten objects from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and challenges you to place their origin both on the globe and in time. You lose points the farther away from the correct place and time.

It’s a wonderfully fun puzzle. Give it a try. It’s that wooden box from east Africa… or New Zealand? Is that distinctively Mesopotamian artwork 2000 BCE Babylonian or 700 BCE Neo-Assyrian? Buddha statue probably Indian, but could be Indonesian, and what century?

(Impressive work by University of Washington undergrad Matthew Chu at only 21.)

Pretty fun game. I got a score of 59,970 today, which isn’t particularly good.

I nailed the first and last artifacts (an Egyptian mural and an Incan shawl) both on geography and time but mixed up a lot of my Chinese, Persian, and Turkish artifacts costing me points.

There was also a bit of horse armor that I guess was Italian made but imitative of Turkish style; I noticed the blend of Euroean and more Eastern influenced but guessed somewhere in Eastern Europe. Ah well.

Good stuff! I really enjoyed that. Thanks for sharing.

The scorechart is interesting too, seeing how your guesses line up with the average ones:

Some of the things I thought were the hardest were quite a bit easier for others, and vice versa.

Yeah, there were a few of those “looks like \_\_\_\_, but also influenced by \_\_\_\_\_” tricky ones.

I already did today’s, but on my work computer. I don’t remember my exact score, but I got top 21% of players. There’s a “share your scorecard” button, which shows color-coded squares similar to Connections:

(Results aided by playing already.)

You have three hints, which can narrow down areas or era. Playing for the last week or two, I’ve noticed artwork style hints, like abstract Arabic writing half hidden in pottery. I recognized Nazca motifs from a few days before. I like learning, and you can find out more about any object afterward.

Hey, pretty good! The first one, a “lion” shaped incense burner, I picked southeast Asia when it should have been more Persia.
