Anti Catholic opinion warrants official warning?
A definition can be found in this sticky in ATMB: Beginner’s Guide to Glossary of Terms on Straight Dope Message Boards.

Thank you for the definition.
“I’m just a boyo whose intentions are good…”

Eric Burdon and the Animals. And you’re soooo old!
And here is the thread in which he whined about it until he got his way.
You know, Q.E.D. that saying that MrDibble was whining is awfully geocentrical of you. He took offense, for a good reason. If someone was to register as Bob Blackamoor or Richie Raghead, I’m sure the flaming would’ve been o par with Vesuvius.
Mr Dibble was insulted. You’ve been around long enough to know that lack of intent is not a viable defense.
He took offense, for a good reason.
No, I don’t think it was a good reason. He chose to take offense at the name, despite the clear evidence that the poster in question had absolutely no intention of insulting anyone; quite the opposite, in fact. And you can just stuff that “lack of intent is no defense” crap. We’re not talking legal definitions here; when it comes to insulting behavior, intent absolutely matters.

And, in any case, you can now clearly see that MrDibble is something of a hypocrite when it comes to offense.

So, in other words, you would have no problem with a username like (say) Nigger McCoy?

Er, no, I can’t. But you can keep crying about it if you want to convince the last two or three fence-sitters that you are an asshole.

Depends. What’s he post about? How does he come across as a person? Is he a frothing skinhead or an educated middle class black professional?

Imagine that. Judging a person on his own merits and not on a label. How horrible of me.

I didn’t ask you if you would like the person, asshole, I asked if you would like the username. For such a smart guy, you seem to be lacking the ability to use a dictionary.
I know what you asked. I answered you. How I’d ultimately respond to the username depends on the person, get it?

Then you’re missing the point, and it’s not you who should be asking us if we get it.

Not that there would be any point to trying, anyway; it’s just going to sail over your head.

You don’t have a point, obviously, other than letting your inner asshole out. If you did, you’d have made it already, instead of jumping into the middle of a conversation , swinging your club around like a Neanderthal. Yes, yes, I’m sure all your buddies at the Snarkpit are duly impressed with you. Now, fuck off.

I’ve already made my point, and it’s not my fault that you’re too thick to see it.

Why people think I’m trying to impress the snarkers is beyond me. Even if I wanted to–which I don’t; I get much more enjoyment out of riling them up–it would be completely hopeless, unless I actually took their advice and killed myself. But of course, I’m too young and have smoked too much pot in my life to ever hold my own opinion. Whatever. I’m not losing any sleep over it.

Q.E.D. and Hostile Dialect, how about we have a new process, whereby a new member gets a number until he’s posted his 151st post, at which time his pre-chosen name goes into effect (with his number underneath, until he reaches 501 posts)?

Or, failing that, you two could get a room…

:stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for the definition, Colibri. As I said, I did a bit of searching, tho not exhaustive.
You’ve been a heck of a lot more help in illuminating this minor matter, than the mod who was directly involved.
The “mod who was directly involved” gave you a warning about calling people idiots in an IMHO thread. No amount of after-the-fact explanations or excuses changes this, and the only one who turned this from a minor matter into a major one is you. If you don’t feel “thread-shitting” should be enough to warrant a mod warning, then maybe I should have been clearer. You got the warning for thread-shitting and directly insulting other posters in IMHO. Such behavior belongs in The BBQ Pit.

Oddly the offense you quote is explicitly allowed.

From Dex’s rules in ATMB:
Are there any rules on insulting other posters?

Generally, you may not directly insult other posters. The strictness of this rule varies a bit by forum, but the basic rule is that you should attack what the other person says, not the other person.

The only exception is the forum called The BBQ Pit, where flaming other posters is permitted.

Hate speech directed against any race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, or gender is a violation of our rules, as outlined in the Registration Agreement.

And please note the difference between an insult directed against a person and an insult against a large group.
ACCEPTABLE: “Anyone who likes the music of Enema is soulless and lacks taste in music.”
NOT ACCEPTABLE: “You like Enema’s music? Then you’re soulless and have no taste in music.”

Now, tell me how the OP didn’t insult a large group of people in an acceptable way.

This kind of stuff reminds me of the cowards in grade school who would say stuff to those they feared from behind the chain link fences…

I try real hard to not say something to anyone or any group that I would not say in real life up close and personal.

edit for spellink
And when used to identify that particular religion, “Catholic” is capitalized.
(italics added)

First of all, I’m with Dinsdale on this one. Threadshitting, ha!, a catchall offense designed to be imposed capriciously and vindictively and only applied when no definite rule has been broken.

Regardless, I take serious offense with Czarcasm’s reply above. What?! That religion? As opposed to any other religion? What is Czarcasm’s personal stick in this matter? That religion? Are you serious? Is the official warning simply a vindictive response to Dinsdale not giving proper respect to catholicism? Just for the record, I will not capitalize catholic. Neither will I pope, god, or jesus.

I will, however, capitalize Jebus, Buddhist, and Holy Popeomobile Batman!

Actually, Spezza, lowercase “catholic” has quite a different meaning from uppercase “Catholic”, and you’ll achieve little by insisting on that capitalization except to call your own education into question. Not to mention that the Pope is a head of state. I find most people who have ever been President of the United States or Mexico reprehensible, but I’d just look silly if I called them “president” for that reason.

Please note that I closed the warning before adding the little note about capitalizing “Catholic”.

Not to mention not capitalizing “Jesus”. What’s the reasoning behind that?

Hi, Czarcasm, can you not be bothered to address my post, or are you going to hide behind silly capitalization issues?

Can you tell me why **Dex’**s statement should be trumped by your interpretation?
