heheh - I once entered the bathroom there, got confused, and peed in the sink. Hey, it looked like an awkward urinal where all the guys face each other and go into one big basin!
And gaz, I’m sure you’ll agree with me, as a Berkeley native, I believe the correct spelling is Stanfurd.
As I am responding merely to add my own private college (a fine-arts institution) to the lengthy list of facilities with unisex restrooms, it seems that the GQ answer to the OP is “certainly yes, they exist.”
At Villanova, generally regarded as a fairly conservative school, we didn’t officially have unisex restrooms. The dorm I was in freshman year was all-male, and officially, so were the bathrooms (except for a couple of one-fixture rooms off of the lobby). There was also officially a curfew for members of the opposite sex in single-sex dorms. All of these official regulations were ignored by both students and staff. If a female was attending a… group study session… in McGuire Hall, she generally used the same bathroom as everyone else. It was a surprise the first time I saw ladies in the men’s room, but not really a big deal.
Well, at my ultra-liberal university, I’m not aware of unisex bathrooms in any of the academic buildings. And in all the dorms I’ve been in, the bathrooms are marked as male or female. However, the signs tend to be ignored for several reasons, mainly distance/convenience (in some dorms, the bathroom’s assigned gender alternates by floor, and most people would rather just use the bathroom nearer to their room) and quality of facilities (oddly enough, the women’s bathrooms in my dorm this past year lacked showers). This is obviously facilitated by the fact that most of the inhabitants of our “ultra-liberal” environment are casual about such things. I mean, outside of classes, college is not at all like a work environment, unless your office hosts regular keg parties.
The club Fabric in London has a unisex bathroom, although it has a little extension down the end with urinals in too. I think Home also had unisex bathrooms when it was still open…
The fire station in one of the little communities out in the boonies where we used to live had unisex bathrooms back in the early 80’s. One sink, two stalls.
My high school(!!!) had one of these. Roughly 2k students 500 / class. Every other bathroom was gender specific, but this one wierd one just off the library was unisex for some reason.
High schoolers being what they are, it was hardly ever used, and I was only in there once. Had an equal number of urinals and stalls.
Come to think of it, might have been a great place to sneak off to and make out, but I was and am a terminal geek, and wouldn’t know about that.
Can’t imagine any plausable reason for having it there, it was at a really awkard spot to get to.
I have a feeling the Home had a weird CCTV setup that showed footage of the mens bathroom into the female bathroom and vice-versa. If it wasn’t Home then some other similar place that may or may not be open now. (IIRC the camera was angled so you couldn’t actually see anything)
Allen Hall (dorm) at the U of I had unisex bathrooms when I was there, back in the 90s. Big midwestern school, not exactly a Bastion Of Liberalness. No urinals, just stalls with high walls. Individual shower “cubicles” with a little towelling-off area, two shower curtains so it’s kind of an airlock to the shower if you see what I mean.
The Oaks Theatre in Berkeley has unisex bathrooms.
Ok, it seems we have established the existence of uni-sex washrooms, in both dorms and like environments, and in public establishments, such as clubs. My question is: is this just a conspiracy to force men to wait to go the bathroom too?
