I usually enjoy all older movies. TCM is once again playing ‘Barry Lyndon’. Is this the most stupid of all movies? Maybe I am missing something. This is TCMs countdown to the Oscars, I can’t believe this was ever a winner!?
I like Barry Lyndon, though I can see how it’s a bit too slow and meandering for some folks. My favorite scene is Barry “deloping” in the duel against his stepson, and the unexpected outcome.
What’s also interesting about BL is how it was filmed - entirely through natural light. Kubrick used special cameras and film and, as I recall, got special candles that burned brightly. He definitely did this film the hard way.
I disagree with your opinions about Barry Lyndon, Beckdawrek, but let me reply just to your claim that it was a “winner” at the Oscars. The categories that it won in were cinematography, costume design, production design, and original song score. These are what’s usually called the technical categories. Some people disparage those categories as being mere background details that no average moviegoer really cares about. I disagree with that claim, but in any case Barry Lyndon didn’t win any nontechnical categories. For what it’s worth, in any case it’s not old enough to fit into the subject of this thread, since it’s not pre-1960. I consider Barry Lyndon to be one of my 100 favorite films.
One of us!
Yes. In Kubrics defence, It is a pretty movie. Ryan O’Neal is nice to look at. His acting might have been stretched too. The best was acting was when the little son dies, though the little boy actor stole the scene.
You are correct about its dating, I went off course there, sorry.
For experimental/shorts, there’s the National Film Board of Canada’s Neighbours (1953), the classic, wacky stop-animation short. I forgot about the somewhat :eek:non-pc:eek: shenanigans near the end. Great early proto synth soundtrack.
Probably posted earlier (but I’m doubting no link) - Luis Bunuel’s Un Chien Andalou - always fun.![]()
Seconded with gusto. I’d also mention The Exterminating Angel and The Milky Way. There will never be another director like Bunuel.
