> I thought his daughter has actually run the show for quite a while now, and he’s sort of a semi-retired brand ambassador / founder emeritus sort.

Christie Hefner stepped down in 2008. Right after announcing a lot downsizing and closings. She knew where the company was going and didn’t want to be part of further cutbacks.

This got me thinking of computer magazines: _Byte_, _PC Mag_, _ComputerWorld_, etc. All the general PC ones are gone or “online” (which is usually a joke). The most amazing decline was _Computer Shopper_ which peaked at 800+ large format pages just as the Internet hit. The only computer-ish magazine in the top 100 is _Wired_ and I don’t see how that one keeps going.

OTOH, certain specialized tech magazines are still going, but most have moved online.

What gets me is that once a week I see a story that talks about something in a print magazine that I had never heard of before, usually because it is quite new.

Who is starting new print mags in this day and age?

The last great catalog. I would sometimes get one and just flip through the pages, wanting it all.

It also doesn’t help that funding Hefner’s lifestyle has always been a financial drain on the company, now more than ever. [Just look at the depressing state of the Playboy Mansion.](http://www.vice.com/read/i-went-to-the-playboy-mansion-and-it-was-kinda-depressing)
