In many law schools, one gets on law review in one of two ways: by grading on or by writing on. They’ll take the top X students in the class, or everyone with a grade point average above a certain level. Those are the people who “grade on” to law review. The other way is through a writing competition; hence, “to write on to law review.” It can be a “closed” problem – no research permitted – or an open problem, which would be annoying.

Huh. I got on law review in my school by putting up my hand and saying, “I’d like to work on law review.” Bit more casual, I guess…

Used to be a time when I could abbreviate any case title, accurately arrange a string cite that included state, federal, and unpublished cases; pending statutes; treatises; internet articles; and interviews; and select the appropriate signal (“no, I think this one calls for a _cf_. signal”) without breaking a sweat (or cracking open the bluebook).

You have to go into that sort of detail in cites in your briefs? wow. I usually just cite to the reporter series with the widest circulation that has the case, usually include the neutral cite, toss in a page number, and that’s it.

Ah - post law-school minions. Okay, I’m not so envious. Do articling students count as minions? we get them from time to time. Other than that, I’m still a bit short on minions.

Not a song about lawyers, but still it might fit: [“Know Your Rights”](http://www.lyricsfreak.com/c/clash/know+your+rights_20031891.html) by **The Clash**.

This post confuses me:

What do you mean? I trust you are not advocating hiding volumes to win a legal writing competition?

No. I was advocating not leaving one’s computer/notes lying around where someone could hide or destroy them. I was an editor, and for every write-on there’s a sob story. If it’s a closed problem the sources are either probably all pre-printed in a packet, or easily available online anyway.
I learned it was written by Bruce Hornsby when Hornsby and Ricky Skaggs were on CMT Crossroads a few weeks back, and they sang End of the Innocence. I think Hornsby is a seriously underregarded songwriter, and was interested to learn that “End of the Innocence” was his.
It is he playing piano on it, right?

I wonder if Colette, who performed at, and was banned from, the Moulin Rouge, had any lawyer songs?
