I don’t live in Hampton, but higher up the peninsula, and I drive through that area relatively often. (Disclaimer: I’m from Illinois and moved here relatively recently, so all this may be business as usual for those who are used to living near oceans, bays, and non-flat geographic features in general).
All I really have to say is that traffic on 64 has a tendency to be pretty terrible, I suppose because there is a sort of bottleneck created for people trying to get from other places in VA out to the Chesapeake area (and then back into VA). Almost every time I’ve driven in that direction (East on 64) after noon or so, I’ve gotten stuck in traffic, whereas that’s only happened to me once when going westward and away from the peninsula/Chesapeake area.
Also, I-64 seems to have patches every few yards, so get ready for some fun staccato action when driving.
