any idea what this could be?

Hmm. Damn. Was probably worth a lot of money, then.

That’s because the terrorists have won!

I think that the overwhelming consensus actually is that there’s a chance it’s a bomb or dangerous.

Even if it’s an extremely tiny chance, which is my opinion, no reason to risk life and limb over it.

I’d probably call the cops, and very likely feel a bit embarrassed when it turns out to be a proctologists instrument or whatever. But I’d still feel it was the choice at the time.

My guess was that it was a discarded bottle which had been used in the “shake and bake” method of cooking meth. That’s a big problem around here.

I bet it’s a bomb and most likely dangerous. I would get out of the house and call the bomb dogs to come out and take it away before it explodes…

Looked like a waste of electrical tape to me.

Bingo. Way back when I used to make such things to drag coax and LAN cables through building conduit to protect the cable.

I’m glad it turned out to be nothing, but if it were me I would definitely had called the cops to check it out. I would know that the odds are it was harmless, but the odds would have had to be a whole lot better before I’d risk my life finding out. There’s some crazy people out there.

And it’s not like there was even a small chance of some kind of potential reward. The odds of danger were tiny, but the odds of it being something worth looking into were even smaller.

I could see risking the tiny odds of it being dangerous if there were comparable odds of say, it being full of diamonds. But to fuck with this thing would be to risk the tiny odds of it being dangerous with the near certain hope that it’s random harmless garbage.

My decision-making rule for situations like this is to ask, “What are the consequences of a miscalculation?” By this rule, calling the police was the correct thing to do.

This rule has served me well in many situations.
