# Any large cities near UK coal mines?

And Glasgow, which had coalmines within a few miles of the city centre, in post 5.

It’s absurd for upend to imply that Scotland is not “traditionally associated with coal mining”, along with eg NE England, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire…

…and lest we forget, The Black Country (in the West Midlands) which is even named for its (former) major industry.

W.G. Grace, one of England’s most remembered sporting heroes was a medical doctor and assisted at the Easton, Bristol colliery disaster of 1886, a city centre pit.
