Any other unique British grocery products I should try?

AFAIR, it has biscuit chunks and raisins in it.

Spiras were hollow, though, and twisted (or moulded to look like that), hence the name (although strictly speaking that shape is a helix, not a spiral). No caramel core as found in your Curly Wurly.

Curly Wurly has caramel in it!

What’s all this about Curly Wurlys (and Opal Fruits and other evil British goods) being banned in Ireland until 1979?

“The list of banned sweets in Ireland included Curly Wurly,Twix,Toblerone and (my personal favourite at the time, for some bizarre reason) Opal Fruits. Those of us living on the east coast had to endure the torture of UTVand HTV beaming smiling British kids into our living rooms, their mouths stuffed with banned goodies and declaring: ‘Opal Fruits - made to make your mouth water’.”

I think it’s a bit like ‘fuse’ (do they still sell that one? -ie little bits of crisp rice, biscuit, caramel, honeycomb and wafer embedded in solid chocolate. Or in other words, all the stuff they sweep up off the floor at the end of the day, made into a bar.

Mmm, I love those. See above re: caramel fanaticism. And the name is cute.

South African - pudding = dessert. Of course, you’d only use it on the appropriate puddings (like I said, any one you might put cream - not whipped, “pouring cream”- on) so baked & steamed puddings (those are puddings sensu strictu, like Christmas pudding), sticky toffee pudding, Malva pudding , but also Jello, milktart, apple crumble, canned fruit, stewed fruit, poached pears, rhubarb pie, trifle, the list goes on. I wouldn’t put it on American-style pudding, you’re right. Nor would I have it with chocolate mousse. I might have it with ice cream rather than choc sauce, but then I’ll have it cold. In most other cases, warm.

I especially love it on the aforesaid Malva pudding, on bread-and-butter pudding, and on jelly (Jello) - in fact, here you can buy one-serving tubs of jelly-and-custard in the supermarket.

Aaaaaah… Bisto!

And don’t mind excruciating toothache. It certainly finds out any dental weaknesses.

Tiffin is raisin and biscuit in chocolate I think. Anyway so I’m not dreaming about Irish Cadbury and UK Cadbury being different.
From Cadbury UK ,

“Cadbury have factories all over the world and endeavour to meet the tastes and requirements of each individual country. The recipe for the chocolate in Ireland has always differed from the recipe used in England to meet consumer requirements. Consumer research has shown that the Irish recipe in England and the English recipe in Ireland was not acceptable by the majority tested.”

I think you made a mistake ordering the chocolate caramel digestives. I bought a pack a few weeks ago and found them rather too sweet (although I had eaten half the packet by the time I came to this conclusion!). Give me a good old McVities Plain Chocolate Digestive (or about a dozen, actually) any day.

I can’t believe no-one is impressed with irn-bru! i think it is just heaven in a bottle! And for hang-overs, nothing beats an ice cold bru. I probably drink a bit too much, but it is the diet irn-bru, (which i think tastes cleaner), so it’s only the bad carbonates that are bad for me and not the sugar.

Is it actually true it is banned on import to the US? if not, go on, if you see it, give it a go! what have you got to lose? you might find a new favourite drink!

Anyone ever try Barr’s other drink they tried to take out in the early 90’s called ‘Girders’? It was taken off the market I think because it had so much sugar in it, it was sending small children crazy on sugar highs. My mum banned me from drinking it  it was fun at the time though.

(sorry for the slight hi-jack!)

mhairi, it’s not Irn-Bru people are dissing - it’s sugar-free Irn-Bru, which is by all accounts an abomination. I’ll take my ammonium ferric citrate with sugar, thanks!

Update: All my products arrived yesterday and they’re all rather good! The Caramel & Milk Chocolate Digestive Biscuits are especially delicious and I’m finding it rather difficult to stop myself from eating the entire package at once. Thanks again everyone!
