Any proof that red cars get more tickets

I would expect the color most likely to cause accidents is all chrome. Especially on a sunny day.

I WANT one of those…

I wonder if the source of this idea is the rumour that bored traffic police play “car snooker”?

This would mean that every other car stopped would have to be red, in order to compile a break (and black cars should be the next favourite).

Scientific observation shows that the most popular color for new automobiles in 2005 was silver at 26%, followed by white at 13%, and black at some number under 10% which I’ve long since forgotten.

Those numbers are from PPG.

OK, ok… I accept complete and utter defeat on my WAG.

It sounded kinda good in my head though.

Those numbers were for North American only, so you might not be wrong in your corner of the world.

Here are 2007’s numbers (for North America), which are a tad different:

Here are the numbers from Europe, which are a bit different (but still dominated by neutral finishes).

Nah… it probably matches the European numbers, considering the amount of Tanks (SUV.s) on the roads here.

So, if we count black and white as “shades of grey” (silver is just shiny grey) then my estimate of 80% is spot-on. Cool.

I read somewhere the most ticketed cars are white because they contrast with the background (trees, dirt, etc.) as opposed to red, green, and other colors that are not as visually distingushable from a distance.

The numbers on AutoTrader.com, which is a good proxy for all US cars, are:

Black - 9%
White - 8.5%
Silver - 8.1%
Blue - 4.9%
Red - 4.7%
Gray - 3.5%
Green - 2.2%

There’s a long tail of variants on these.
