This is a spin off from this [pit thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=50561). I find it tragedy that any one would isolate themselves from the great things this world has to offer because of the fear of objectionable content. So, on the suggestion of **DuckDuckGoose** I’m asking for your help to expand **Garfield226’s** horizons. What kind of music would you recommend to a young teen of sensitive sensibilities? ---

Oh, fer chrissake. Aside from Eminem and a variety of urban rap groups, just how many popular music artists DO scream “fuck the strumpets!” and “shoot the police!” in their work? The answer would be _nearly anything._ And I’m talking popular music/rock music, too. (Clearly, **Garfield226** should feel free to kick back with some Schumann _leider_ and the entire recorded output of Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five without fear of endangering his soul.) Just how sensitive are we talking, anyway? Is “I Want to Hold Your Hand” overly sexual in content? ---

Best not take any chances, even dear Doris Day managed to get herself banned from UK airwaves once. Stick to Alma Cogan, nice, safe and unchallenging . ---

Sheryl Crow, Dave Matthews Band, Kansas (great old stuff), Rush. I, too, am a Christian and don’t have any problems with these folks. And,yes, I own a butt-load more than this, but I’m at work and these are the only ones I can think of. Most of my collection is jazz and classical. ---

I would like to state that I never said I had a problem with secular rock, I merely like listening to music that has subject matter that I agree with. I’ve listened to the Beatles and numerous other secular bands. I also think my horizons are plenty broad, as I stated in my second post in the Pit thread, but I will be reading the thread. . . ---

Hey this is a funny thread. No one seems to have posted here in ten days though. Let’s bring it back, k? I’ll come back and post when I think of some cool “safe” music. Oh wait I thought of one band. The Monkees! Safe corporate company created music. (And hot guys.) Sure, there’s no god in the Monkees but its safe, believe me. 🙂 ---

(Mike Nesmith had non-corporate music earlier, but…) The Monkee’s song “Goin’ Down” is about suicide, “Mommy and Daddy” is a (pathetic attempt at a) subversive song telling kids to ask their parents about drugs and the plight of American Indians, “Zor and Zam” is a (banal) anti-war protest song, “Can You Dig It” is a psychedelic drug song, I could just go on and on. But I won’t. 😃 On the other hand, The Archies are probably safe. Even in their last albums, the strongest statements they made were “Cars and factories that pollute too much are bad” and “Love is groovy, in a hand-holding sort of way”. Fenris ---

I think he should listen to alot of TOOL. TOOL doesn’t say anything bad about religion or especially Scientology. (really bored at 2:30 in the morning) ---

From the looks of what Garfield226 said in his first post, TOOL might not be a bad choice for him. That’s only if he can look beyond the “God-bashing” sterotype that TOOL has been hit with. They don’t sing about stupid stuff like “I’m depressed” and idiotic drivel like that. ---

I would suggest just about anything by Roger Waters. _Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking_ is wonderous, and his _In The Flesh_ tour (just coming out on CD, I believe) was astounding. Oh, wait, he’s one of those “subversive” types, ain’t he? 😃 ---
