I took a break during the weekend. I’m back to it, I guess.
Thanks, **Kat**. I like playing Johnny Cash songs because they generally aren’t too hard and they go okay with my voice.
I live with my parents\*, so I usually do these when they aren’t around. At least the really embarrassing ones. I’ll have to wait for a good time before I do the Tenacious D one or the 5th Dimension one. My voice is kind of weak right now (more so than usual), so I won’t do any more now anyway.
I don’t know the Penetration song, but I happen to have a cd with it on it. I just need to find it.
I did both the Dylan ones. Actually, I don’t know Subterranean Homesick Blues but I know some other songs from the album, so I did Mr. Tambourine Man. I’m not satisfied with either one right now, so I’ll redo them at some point and not post the ones I have now.
\*For those who are curious, I go to a community college. If all goes well I’ll transfer to another college next year and will move out then.

Eh, just to fill in the gap I’ll post the song I wrote, but first I have to say a few things about it.
I wrote the lyrics first, sometime during my senior year of high school. I was in the Creative Writing Club, and someone wrote for a prompt “write about the bane of your existence”. Except with her handwriting it looked like it said “the dane of your existence”. We had a friend named Dayne so I said to the people I was sitting with (I think there were two girls) “I should write something about Dayne. Maybe a love song.” They of course thought this was funny, so I decided to actually go ahead and try it. I ripped the chorus off of of the the song “Head On” by the Jesus and Mary Chain. Except it was more like the Pixies version. I just wrote out the lyrics and figured I could someday put music to them. I made up a lot of stuff like how I met him so it wouldn’t freak him out too much.
About a year ago I was taking a Creative Writing project, and one of our assignments was to do something creative that wasn’t poetry or prose. I decided to record myself playing a bunch of songs, and putting this one to music and recording it too.
I put off the assignment so I ended up doing all of the songs over two or three days for several hours each. By the time I got to this one my voice and hands were worn out. I had to figure out how to put this to music and was scrawling the chords and revised lyrics into my notebook. So not only was my singing and guitar playing even worse than usual, but I had to read my bad handwriting and figure out what to play. I just had to get it done quickly. There’s even a couple parts where you can hear me flip the notebook page. A lot of it is improvised too. Here’s the song:

I consider it a rough draft. I’m going to revise it at some point if I can find the notebook, I’ve already come up with some changes in my head. Despite the bad-even-for-me singing and the clumsy guitar playing and the bad flow, I think there’s a decent song in here. A few parts remind me of Elvis Costello. My favorite part is after the second chorus where I’m playing some chords, and then stop for a second and go into the main chord sequence. I didn’t know what I was doing at the time and it wasn’t until I listened to it later that I realized how cool it sounds.
I found the notebook it was in. Here are the lyrics as they were originally written (I made some changes on the fly while I sang) :

I did this one yesterday but I didn’t like the result a whole lot. I was able to cut loose today and it turned out much better. This song’s a lot of fun to play as long as no one’s around so you can wail out the song. The only problem is that my e string was out of tune when I recorded it. I didn’t do the last verse because I thought the song was over and didn’t scroll down on the chord page.

I substituted this for Subterranean Homesick Blues because I don’t know it and didn’t really want to try and guess. I thought this might be okay because William Shatner did it so my version can be compared to his. I only did the first couple verses.

Well, you’re not going to be disappointed by this. There are several chords here I couldn’t play well. Falsetto is on overdrive here. On a side note, I always thought this was by the Mamas and the Papas, but I guess it’s by the Fifth Dimension.
