Anybody else like War movies?

That’s on my Netflix queue.

A war film that’s in (alternative) theatres right now is Downfall. It’s a German film with subtitles about the last week/s of the Nazi regime, as the Russians advanced into central Berlin. The main theme of the movie: suicide. There are quite a lot of them over the course of the film, and the majority of them, you watch. Hitler’s brilliantly acted, too; there’s a perfect mix of charm, charisma, and utterly horrible anger and insanity.

It’s a bit of a downer.

Me.

It’s one of Paul Veerhoven’s (sp?) pre-Hollywood films if I’m remembering correctly. Pretty historically accurate and exiting. What more could one ask?

Okay, maybe only nineteen of the men were from Wales, and “Men of Harlech” was not yet the regimental march and probably wasn’t sung at Rorke’s Drift and the Zulu did not salute the mighty warriors* who had held them off but where else do you get to see men advancing while firing by ranks?

    • I do not wish any sarcasm be read into that phrase. Both sides were composed of mighty warriors, though it probably came as a surprise to the Royal Engineers that they were.

Thank you for bringing Mary Ure back to my consciousness. Hotness.

And “Broadsword calling Danny Boy” is CLASSIC !!! I love it. (I’ve often used the Trekkie version “Queen to queen’s level 3”).

You guys have already named all my favorite War movies (I’m glad someone finally mentioned “Mr. Roberts”).

Any of you who have ever been in basic training for any service will find the boot camp scenes in “Full Metal Jacket” extremely funny. I thought I would die gasping for breath every time R. Lee Emery opened his mouth.

I agree, it was very good. I was sorta expecting more of a silly romantic comedy from this one, but they do a great job showing how horrible and futile that war must have been like for the people in the trenches.

I totally agree, I wathced this movie just after Basic Training at Ft. Jackson. It’s a good thing they got rid of corporal punishment by the time I went through. We had a guy who had to keep a peach seed in his hand to distinguish left from right.

I agree there aren’t enough Navy Flicks. I tend to watch U-571 anytime I watch Hunt for Red October

I disliked the concept of Windtalkers, both because it starred Nicholas Cage and because it was one of those movies supposedly about a minority person’s experiences but feels it has to play up some white guy’s role to get anybody to see it. And I’ve only seen it in Spanish, which I don’t speak. And I will admit that I have never fired any of the weapons used in it fired in real life, but I liked how you could tell between the different bangs instead of having the same one for 6mm Type 38 rifles as .45 Colts. I also found it interesting that the .45 automatics made a clank noise after the bang as the receiver struck its stop. Thinking about it, that sounded pretty likely but, like I said, I haven’t heard one IRL.
