All Republicans know how to do is cut taxes.
Economy booming? Cut taxes!
Economy tanking? Cut taxes!
Gloing to war? Cut taxes!
Natural disaster? Cut taxes!
High gas prices? Cut taxes!
Which party is it that doesn’t have any new ideas?

Nit away! Without my glasses, I get lost in zeros all the time!
At least we know someone around here is paying attention!
In my campaign, I am proposing socialized gasoline! That’s right, the cost of gas has become an undue burden on every segment of this society. Under my plan, the government will provide every American with all the FREE gasoline that God meant us to have. Pumps will be left on 24 hours a day with the credit card readers retired from service.
I look forward to the changes this grand plan will bestow on us as a people and the bondage will be freed from.
Ah, a Republican I see.
I agree. And we should be using those taxes to create an effiecient, wide-reaching public transportation service like those in Europe. Economic pressure is the only way to wean people from cars.
Yeah, but it’s not so much “cure cancer” brilliant as it is “Bond villain” brilliant.
Why is this $100 dumb, and the $300 rebate that all taxpayers got a few years back a great idea?
Money to me = good
Money from me = bad
This falls into the good catagory.
Also it seems like people are not cutting back on gas, they are cutting back on things like eating out. That $100 could make up for the slowdown, but encouraging people to contine to do other things.
I think they’re both dumb, for the same reason I wouldn’t buy expensive gifts on my credit card to cheer my wife up over the fact we’re so deeply in debt. (We’re not, actually, that’s just an example.) It’s not enough money to accomplish anything, and deepening the deficit just means that at some point I’m going to have to pay $200 in taxes for the $100 I get now.
This is the first I’ve heard of it as I haven’t been paying attention to the news this week.
Frankly, it’s insulting. Just as the $300 “try to buy my vote” rebate was.
The more I sit here and think about it the stupider it sounds. Give me money…to defray the cost of fuel…that I will end up just putting back in my tank. And that will help ME?
My head hurts now.
My take is that the $100 rebate is just a gimmick to build public support for the proposal (I can hear people saying “Hey, free money” already). What they’re really after is opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling. That’s not necessarily a bad thing; it would give us additional energy resources that aren’t controlled of the Arabs.
Even speaking as the driver of a gas-guzzling minivan, I think this is the most absurd suggestion I’ve heard from the government about the high price of gas to date.
I easily spend close to $100 every month in gas now, between having a low gas-mileage cars and two kids who have to be toted all over town every week. An extra $100 bucks from the government would just be a drop in the bucket.
I would much prefer that they take the $100/car that they are proposing here and invest it in alternative fuel research. Personally, I’m already sick and tired of being dependent on fossil fuels. My community’s public transportation system is a joke, though, and there are no gasoline alternatives in the area where I live.
Has anyone else notices that automobile commercials no longer include MPG values, which used to be a standard feature??
It’s stupid for every reason except the one that matters to career politicians: Joe Sixpack will go for it, because J.S. thinks Americans have a right to cheap gas.
Wow, a small amount of Free Money[sup]TM[/sup]! That completely makes me forget about the government’s role in ignoring the problems that got us into this mess!
Perhaps the stupidest thing I have ever heard.
A hundred bucks, that the country needs anyway because of the bullshit in Iraq?
A hundred bucks is not going to do anything for your average driver.
A hundred bucks taken from my savings account and put into my checking account does not make me ‘richer’.
Was there a way to donate to alternative energy research on our tax forms in ‘06’.
I seem to remember that there was.
Regrettably, even if you didn’t even bother to vote, they all are still technically “ours”. Sorta like having a child who grows up to be a serial killer. It was fronted by Bill Frist as a possible remedy, along with the drilling, so I don’t know if the Pubs are taking credit for it or just announcing it as the majority party. I suspect the former, but they’re giving themselves room to backpedal away from it if the dumb motherf…excuse me, citizens. . .catch on to the scam.
I’m not even necessarily opposed to ANWR drilling, but if it was approved today, the first drop of oil wouldn’t come down the pipe for another ten years.
My bad. I just read that linked article, and it is indeed a Republican proposal. And the pounding in my head continues.
I already use public transportation, and have for years. They can take my hundred dollars and shove it up their ass.
To me, it’s painfully obvious. It’s grossly insulting, in my opinion. “Hell, throw 'em some money, and they’ll never notice what else is going on.” And worse, it’s true.
For about six months, as I understand. What I’ve heard is that it’s believed that there is enough oil to meet our needs for six months, if we cut off all other suppliers. Which is a hell of a lot of oil, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not that much when compared to irrepairably destroying a wildlife preserve. Best to leave it where it is for a really, really rainy day (like huge wars in the ME) not just because soccer moms are snivelling that now we have to pay roughly half of what Europeans pay to fill up our cars.
Secondly, a lot of our gas comes from Argentina, doesn’t it? (Or is that just natural gas?) That’s not in Arab control.
Here’s hoping it’s $100 in change, then.
No, a nice brand new crinkly paper note, so they get paper cuts
