I’ve been using a plastic pumpkin.
So far, no luck.
Ooo. Talk dirty to me, baby.
Nothing wrong with venison calfs. Tender is good. And any calf, in beef, that was this small, should be sacrificed for the good of the herd.
I’m certain that if I had passed on this doe, I’d have hunted the rest of the weekend and found nothing.
<ahem> Good day sir or madam, I hear you have some troublesome critters on your property. I would like to offer my services in removing at least one of them with no charge to you! That’s right! Free of charge I will come to your land and kill an ornery ol’ elk!
The only proper place to shoot an elk is if it’s standing in the bed of your pickup truck. Seriously, packing out a white tail can be hell. I can’t imagine having to pull a bull elk out on a sled through the mountains, even if you had a four wheeler.
You don’t take it out in one piece unless you are pretty close to the truck (three years ago I dropped one 25 yards from a road, that rocked!), you quarter the thing and sometimes bone it as well. It also helps if you hunt with big Norsemen.

Bobo, you keep teasing me with these big Norsemen. And the elk hunting. Are you *trying * to get me to stalk you, or what?
But if Lieu lets you take care of his pesky problem, you’d have to hurl something large at me to get rid of me… say, a tall, stocky blonde?
Sten and Lars are visible in this and both are single, I think… I’m not really sure what good they are, except for owning big trucks and carrying heavy things
Brats and hotlinks are about all they do with their meat. I treat game about the same as beef - maybe add some extra fat, but no special recipes.
I’ve often wondered about this. Hunting in bear country (which I’ve never really done. They say there’s black bears in N. Wisconsin, but damned if I’ve ever seen one) does one really have the time to gut and dress a game animal? I’d think that getting ones tail out of the woods with the carcass as soon as possible would be choice number one.
Heh, thanks, Bobo, mighty neighborly of you. I haven’t seen ‘em yet but the foreman says they’re way below the river in the southern part (no roads) and back deep in some canyons. The effort will likely resemble some kind of an expedition. 25’ from a road sounds positively heavenly.
Next time, try your antelope as stroganoff with mushrooms and water chestnuts served over wild rice. It’s belly pattin’ good.
Water chestnuts? Now you’re just getting disgusting.
Yep, I’ll miss the opening weekend but I’ll be out there for the last three days of the gun season.
I’ll be using my Winchester Model 94 lever action carbine, in .32 Winchester Special. It’s been in my family since my great-grandpa bought when he got home from WWII. I shot a 188 lb doe with it last year.
I’ve been eating wild elk all summer from a generous friend that shot one and it is absolutely delicious, I beginning to think I prefer elk to beef.
As far as whitetail recipes, I like chicken-fried steak, bacon-wrapped and garlic studded tenderloins, and canned venison stew.
My mother dated a man years and years ago in Montana who bought his Elk tags, and for 4 years didn’t even see one. He started to claim that the Elk is a mythical animal.
My mother did him up a real nice chalk drawing of an Elk, with a caption… the dictionary definition.
