I work in people-orientated job in a people-orientated company (in HR for a social care charity), my hobbies are all very sociable (I’m an actress and Chair - until very recently Social Secretary - of a theatre company), and I have huge numbers of friends, all of whom regard me as their very best friend (for my part the only person I regard as anything closer than a buddy is my husband), and yet, I fundamentally just don’t like people. Yep, I’m a misanthrope I have trouble tolerating being around 90% of the people that I’ve met for more then a couple of hours with out wanting to punch them repeatedly. Even my best friend becomes one of the people I hate after about a week, we’ve been on two vacations together and any more then that and I start getting the punchy feeling if I don’t get away. I can fake friendly and out going but only for short periods of time. ---

With individuals a 50% rule seems to apply; I like (or tolerate) roughly half the people I encounter, and dislike the other half. With groups, I’ve found that virtue is inversely proportional to group size. Families, clubs, circles of friends, and small businesses tend to be fairly inoffensive. Governments, corporations, religions, and other large, bureaucratic organizations are soul-crushing, and to be avoided. Humanity as a whole is evil, and I wouldn’t be particularly surprised (or disappointed) if we end up wiping ourselves off the face of the planet through our collective greed and stupidity. ---

From the movie **Barfly** : Woman: “Don’t you just hate people?” Henry Chinaski: “Nah, I don’t hate people - I just feel better when they’re not around.” I don’t think we would feel so misanthropic if we weren’t obliged to interact with milling mobs of near-strangers. I believe that we’re evolved to only be able to deal with a much smaller interrelated group of family and friends: our village. Coping with a much larger population all the time isn’t good for our psyches, IMO. ---

Yeah, I am a misanthrope. Normally in public, I can at least control it, but for some reason whenever I am in a book store, it comes out in full force. And, of course, like everyone else, I have exceptions to my hate, but they are few and far between. ---

I’m the same way as Randal. I like being out in public, having stuff going around, but I want it to be like I’m in a bubble looking out.
