We recently set up a network in our apartment, and one of the things we had to do was come up with a name for each computer. My roomies thought it was a bit strange that I already had names for each machine and used them in conversations much as one would use the name of a beloved pet. Am I the only one with this particular quirk? My primary machine is an overclocked Celeron. Due to its unstable nature, I named it Blaine, after the insane train in The Dark Tower series. My NT Server is Hactar, the evil computer from The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy that wants to destroy the universe. My laptop is the Grey Matter. Named after a sentient ship from Iain Banks’ Excession. Mostly because it is cool, but in a kinda sick way (the way I aquired the machine was a bit dubious, and so were its uses. Its a bit older now, but still useful) I also have partial ownership of a Linux box named Skynet. If you don’t get it, you won’t. ---

Skynet? You mean, it’s what causes the war against the machines? Who the heck is Hactar? I don’t remember any computer that wants to take over the universe in HHGTTG. (Mind you, I haven’t read it in years…) I don’t name my computers. I used to have one at my work in New Zealand called George, but that was just because you had to define them on the network. I’ve got two in the room here: Europium and Dubnium, named after the elements corresponding to the last portion of the i.p. My roommate’s machine is Nickel. Same reason. Another suitemate named his “ersatz”. The computer that I have in my car is “Lorelei”. ---

This computer is Crom. Everytime it crashes, I yell “Crom” just like Conan did. Somehow it makes me feel better. My other box is Marvin, as in “the paranoid android”. I’m surprised no one else had this. ---

Well, my Mac at home is more or less named “Darkseid?!” (that’s the icon and name for the hard drive on the desktop), but I never actually call it that. Although my “real” machine has to have a dull name (my company’s initials, my initials, and “dev” to signify I’m in R&D), we’re free to name our test machines whatever we want. I currently have “bananafish”,“phoebe” and “zooey”. The names perpetually confuse my coworkers. I take it a sign that absolutely none of them are literate. ---
