I’d leave if there were animated avatars or sigs.
Those would both be obnoxious. And I think if a poster repeatedly posts obnoxious animated gifs in every discussion without contributing to the topic at hand they should be moderated – but they should also be moderated if they repeatedly post a memey one liner of text in every thread without contributing, too. But the occasional animated GIF will not be the downfall of this board. It might even make things more fun!
You hate puppies, emojis, and happiness too?
The scroll buffer shuffle is a pain, but the End key on your keyboard takes care of that.
I design web courses, and the top-to-bottom layout in general is becoming more prevalent. HTML5 is designed for other platforms besides desktop, so we have to adapt anyway. Change is hard, but take your time about it. Do one thing at a time. I have to figure out some way of changing my icon to fit inside the little circle, but I’m not going to stress about it.
this is good advice for life in general.
change IS hard. don’t stress about it!
Don’t worry, be happy now!
Oh, wow. I finally have use for those “home” and “end” keys on my keyboard! Thanks for the tip.
Given the lack of pagination, that’s a pretty damn big limit already. I think we may just have to adapt to creating more shorter threads.
I was very unhappy when I first came over and my internet was slow. This site is nearly unusable with slow internet. Since fixing my internet problems it’s been fine.
I don’t know if we will lose some people who routinely have slow internet. And I don’t find navigation at all intuitive. I’ve worked it out well enough for now, but that took other people helping me. So… I don’t know, will those issues scare away new posters? Or will the site feel welcoming and attractive to a new generation? Time will tell.
I’m with you, the first few hours were a mess but the changes came very quickly. I hate infinite scroll on sites like Flyer Talk but it actually seems to work here. The right hand scroll bar makes it very easy if I come back to a thread and want to quickly find an earlier message.
I have what’s now considered quite slow internet and this site works for me.
There may, of course, be people whose access is even slower. – just ran a test on two sites. One gave a download speed of 2 mbps, the other of about 2.5. Neither one would even give me a reading on the upload speed.
I am not leaving, but yes, this forum is far clunkier and harder on the eye than the old one. Almost enough to make me prefer the 504 timeout errors.
Yeah, I’ve got marginal internet on an ancient mac, and speed is not a problem.
I shot a message to Tubadiva, but it should be ULTA low priority for her. I guess it really doesn’t matter whether I post as Dinsdale or Dinsdale1. So I’ll just get used to bumbling around here as I generally do w/ tech changes, and will shortly find an approach that suits me fine. Generally involves ignoring all bells and whistles - the “customization” that so many folk seem to feel important.
No going to catalog my "gripes other than to say the scrolling instead of pages is unpleasant. Haven’t yet found the speed scroll or whatever - I assume it is hiding in plain sight.

Look over to the immediate right.
To give a bit more detail: on the right side of the screen (though I think at least one poster sees it on the left), there’s a post count, which will look something like 253/254 (if you’re looking at the 253rd post in a thread with 254 posts in it.) Just next to that should be a vertical bar. You can slide that up or down, or click anywhere along the bar, or click on the date (or time) at the top of the bar to go to first post or the time (or date) at the bottom to go to last post.
Well THAT was easy! Not sure what some of you were having trouble w/. Just give me a call if any of you need any tech support!
Like I said - hiding in plain sight.
How the hell could something so obvious be perfectly INVISIBLE to me?! It is almost as though my brain just classifies anything I don’t expect as unnecessary “decoration” or something. Where’s a good headsmack emoji when ya need one?!
Here you go: (Although I liked the old one better.)
I think a lot of people’s brains do that; and that those whose brains don’t do it often have trouble with excess distractions.
Somewhere in Pratchett * there’s a passage about humans’ ability to ignore things being one of our greatest strengths. – ah, I’m thinking of this passage in A Hat Full of Sky (sixth quote down on the page.)
*I sometimes think that everything is somewhere in Pratchett. Maybe he’s become One with the Library.
You will also see two numbers there (in black), above the date (in gray) - for example 257/259. The one on the left is the number of the post you’re looking at, whereas the one on the right is the total number of posts. Now, when I click on the number on the left (i.e. 257), post 257 will turn light blue. It is exactly the post where you wonder how the hell something so obvious could be perfectly invisible for you.
