Not sure I like it (I don’t like change!) but I guess the lack of timeout errors is nice.
I will probably like it given some time. I got my first new cell phone in… 5 years?.. a couple of weeks ago (the pixel 3a, if anyone cares ) and I disliked all the new features intensely for about a day, and now I can’t live without them…
It was quite an interestingly jarring experience coming to the new board, but I am happy with the changes. Mostly because the old style would constantly create problems on my work computer - threads not loading up, boards being ridiculously slow, etc. This is much much smoother!
And for anyone looking for a way to subscribe to threads, the little bell icon under that scrollbar gives you a bunch of options for following threads.
“Watching” a thread will give you notifications every time someone posts in that thread. It’ll also put a little number-badge on your profile icon at the top letting you know, then when you click on your profile icon, you’ll get a drop down showing you who replied to it, and a hotlink to bring you right to it. I dig it.
Thanks guys. Not to my credit that, when confronted with even this mild degree of required tech change, my overriding preference is to quit, rather than try to figure it out.
Apparently I’m still Dinsdale1. Figured out how to change to Simple Sam. Still perceiving countless things as quite different and cumbersome, despite many of you maintaining that they are identical (or nearly so.)
And for all of you who claim you mean no insult by observing that you prefer the new system and find it simple, you may wish to consider that your remarks could be interpreted as saying that I’m stupid. No big deal - I’ve been called worse. But you might wish to realize that you are CONVEYING an insult, even if you are sincere in claiming none is intended.
My ignorance/incompetence/recalcitrance ought not require such a group effort on youse guys’ parts. I may check back occasionally, but we’ll see…
(I’m so out of touch, that I never found the timeouts and other glitches that big of a deal. Didn’t seriously interfere w/ my enjoying the boards.)
There’s a lot of new stuff. It’s worrisome that it seems like we need to read a manual to interact with the board. I can’t recall any other board I’m on which is not self-evident how things work. I don’t know how many people are going to make the effort to learn how Discourse works. The vBulletin-style boards that are prevalent on the internet seem better for random people being able to jump right in. Certainly if you are a die-hard SMDB member you will make the effort, but I don’t know how many casual members will do the same.
Many members won’t make a post saying that they don’t like the format. They will just trickle away. We shouldn’t look at this thread as the OP is the only one who is unhappy. Most unhappy people will just vanish. The admins should be monitoring the board traffic to see how usage is changing. If the traffic is similar to before, then great! But if things are dropping off, it may be an indication we’re losing members that we won’t get back.
I will stay. I haven’t figured out how to quote yet, but I don’t think it’s going to be very hard.
It looks different than I’m used to, which is unfortunate. I will have to relearn how to make each thread page have the maximum number of posts in it as well. Only one of these things (looking different) is an actual problem.
I had a moment of thinking “Is it really worth the hassle of figuring all this out?” too. I do think it’s a lot less intuitive and less easy to just jump into than the old vBulletin board, but I don’t know how much of that is inherent and how much is because, having been on the old board so long, I was used to it and knew my way around.
Anyway, I’m not leaving, at least not yet. But if it hurts my brain to be here, at least in the early stages, I may not spend as much time here as I did on the old board.
We’d miss all those who are a part of the family. It’ll take a bit of getting used to, but if you make a real effort to just do it, it’ll get easier. The board would be a lesser place without all of you.
Yes! As soon as I joined Simple Sam I got a lot less frustrated with the change. Dinsdale I hope you decide to stay. We need all the old hands around here.
I agree, and this is where a “like” function really comes in handy, and I was sorry to see it go. I didn’t need to add another post to the thread; I just wanted to let you know that I read, acknowledged and approved of your post.
I remember it took me awhile to absorb all the functionality of the old site, and I don’t see this as any different, I’m not going to leave just because formatting has changed.
As for additions that I don’t like, I see they’ve already gotten rid of the Like feature, at least I don’t see it, for which thank you. I think I prefer pages to the infinite scrolling, but I’m going to give it a while to see if I can get used to it. I’m certainly willing to let things shake out for a while before I would consider it so lost a cause that I would leave.
