I voted for the 2005 one (Batman Begins), but it’s pretty much a toss-up between that and 2008 (The Dark Knight). The 2012 one was… well, it existed, and that’s about all there is to be said about it.
The 90s movies were something of an odd duck: They were sort of trying to be campy, and sort of trying to be serious, which harmed them in both ways. If I want camp, I want Adam West, and if I want serious, I want the 21st-century ones.
Apparently I am the first person to vote for Dark Knight Rises which surprises me a bit. I thought Bane was a great villain with a genuinely interesting arc and Catwoman was a fun character. I saw Batman Returns back in the day and liked it but remember very little about it; have to watch it again some day. I loved the 1966 film when I was a kid but it seemed the kind of film which wouldn’t hold up; watched some clips a few years back and I was surprised how enjoyable they were. I have to re-watch that one also.
Not surprised that Dark Knight tops the poll. I liked it but both the film and its version of the Joker were too grim; I prefer a lighter touch in my comic book films.
It’s certainly not the worst movie, but it does have pretty severe pacing issues. They try to throw everything in right at the start and then the movie slows to a complete halt while he’s in the pit for what seems like hours.
Not a fan of Batman Returns, it’s not a Batman Movie, it’s a Tim Burton Freak show.
Should be renamed Batman Returns Occasionally, most of the movie is Catwoman, Penguin and Max Shreck screwing around with Batman popping up once in a while for an awkward fight scene.
The Scene that annoys me to no end is when that Dumb Ice Queen falls off the edge of the building and Batman just stands there like a big dope. He makes no attempt to rescue her and 2 seconds later he magically pops out some Gigantic wings and glides off to safety. Thanks for nothing ya jerk!
The opening of Batman 89’ is pretty stupid as he watches that family get mugged and instead of swooping down and preventing the mugging. Waits until the Dad gets a probable concussion(or worse)
before going after the muggers and only to scare them. Not very heroic, Burton’s Batman just seems to stand around waiting for stuff to happen.
'89 for me. Keaton was surprisingly good in the title role and Nicholson chewed the scenery with great panache as the Joker. Gotham City never looked gloomier and more evocative.
Batman is a franchise I’d like to like, but it has never quite come together for me.
I liked the 60s TV show as a kid, but find it unwatchable as an adult. It doesn’t even get “nostalgia filters” like the original Battlestar Galactica or the 80’s TV series Buck Rogers.
I liked Michael Keaton’s Batman, but I didn’t care for Tim Burton’s take on it, his aesthetic. Schumaker’s efforts are laughable (and cringeworthy).
I liked Christopher Nolan’s look and storylines much better, but Christian Bale didn’t “click” with me.
Gary Oldman’s Jim Gordon and Heath Ledger’s Joker are both phenomenal.
And let’s face it, Morgan Freeman usually ups the quality of just about anything he participates in, so no knocks there. The man can read a phone book and make it interesting.
