I love how the OP keeps claiming that 18 months of Obama shows that Democratic policies don’t work, when it was 8 years of Bush that pretty much proved to more than a simple majority of the nation that Republican policies are the finest of bullshit.

And I think unconditional support for Israel by the US does neither country any favors.

> [@](#):

> For example, I heard something about a Churchill bust being returned to England. I don’t know the story behind it, but the idea of doing that is shocking to me.

You’re shocked by a story you know virtually nothing about? Let me assure you that the Churchill bust (and the wrong-format DVD gift to Brown) were seen in the UK at worst as minor protocol faux pas (dammit, what’s the plural of “faux pas”) and at best a source of a few jokes. Obama could have put a whoopee cushion on Brown’s seat and he’d have improved his image with the British.

> [@](#):
>
> I don’t think McCain would spend as much time “apologizing for America’s arrogance”.

No, he’d have continued the arrogance.

> [@](#):
>
> Bush’s foreign policy wasn’t perfect, but he drew a clear line between friends and enemies. There are those in the world who would gladly do us harm and it doesn’t bother me a bit if they fear us.

Except that those that we were most arrogant to were the “traditional allies” you just mentioned.

The man responsible for the US PATRIOT Act?

> [@](#):

True - it would have been the corporate execs instead.

> [@](#):

Hard to say, although the Republicans have a history of simply handing over the money, not attaching any strings to it.

> [@](#):
>
> I don’t think the health care bill would have passed in its current form. I don’t think that the two Supreme Court nominees would have been as far to the left as they are.

Both safe bets, although if you think the Sotomayor and Kagan are far to the left you have a skewed political outlook.

> [@](#):
>
> There are positives to the Obama presidency, however. I generally disagree with liberal politics, so the coming Democrat bloodbath will please me. It wouldn’t be coming without the country seeing what happens when you let someone like Obama take the wheel.

Yes, the country is so much worse off than it was a year and a half ago.

> [@](#):
>
> Yes, yes, I know. It’s too early, people will start to like the health car bill, Obama’s troubles are a right-wing media fantasy. Keep telling yourself that as Democrat candidates that aren’t in very blue areas keep having “scheduling conflicts” because they don’t want a picture of them and Obama on the same stage.

We’ll see.

> [@](#):
>
> A solid majority of the American people do not want a bigger government and they are concerned about government spending. Poll after poll confirms this. That’s why many Democrats are having to play the game of talking like a fiscal conservative at home and voting the party line in Washington. Many of them are going to get caught and removed from office.

It’s so \*\*cute \*\*when people think the Republicans are the party of small government and [fiscal responsibility](http://blogs.venturacountystar.com/greenberg/archives/2008/08/deficits.html).

> I’ve read in this thread more than once about how politically astute dopers are. Those that follow current events are already aware of these facts, as ideologically inconvenient as they are. The current climate would not have been possible without the election of Obama.

Very true, but probably not in the way that you mean.

You. Remember how you said torture was widely regarded as being a highly effective interrogation technique? That’s false. Carrying Ann Coulter’s book everywhere you go does not make her opinions widely regarded.

Depends on how much of it is based on a cult of personality rather than agenda or likelihood of success. Depends on the amount of Kool-Aid drunk, IOW. One way to tell is the strenuousness with which other candidates are peremptorily denigrated for their audacity in challenging the one for whom the “enthusiasm” in question is shown.

Search GD for the word “bitch” for examples.

I must admit that I did worship the fact that Obama was not Bush.

My apologies, I guess I didn’t read it as carefully as others did. I thought the other question was about whether or not the SDMB Obama supporters were “worshippers”, but since you brought up the “Obama Country” thing (which is akin to a bumper sticker and nothing like excessive hero-worship) in relation to this questionable question, it must be something else. If I get a free few hours later I’ll see if i can re-read the thread and find a question that’s a reasonable answer to.
