Has anyone else played the boxing game?

Do you throw punches with both hands?

Do you block punches by moving your hands?

If you drop your hands to your side, does the fighter drop his hands?

If you throw a faster punch IRL, does your fighter throw a faster punch?

How do you move side to side?
Yes, briefly.
You block them by holding them up in front of you.
I don’t think so.
I think so.
I don’t think you can move.

Like the other Wii Sports games, it’s not very deep. They’re meant to just be easy to get into and have fun with without putting a lot of time in.

Baseball works well. My dad doesn’t play video games, and he did better than I did when he tried out the batting. Everything beyond pitching and batting is automated: how many bases you get or whether it’s caught is determined by where the ball goes.

Golf hasn’t been working out too well for me. It’s hard for me to get the right amount of power.

I’ve found that in the bowling game, I throw a nasty rightward curve. I’m not sure why, but my other family members who tried it out didn’t have the problem so I guess it’s just me.

I forgot to answer the second question: yes (and while I’m at it, the first “them” shouldn’t be in the answer to the third one)

You’re probably twisting your wrist when you throw (Are you left-handed? Righties tend to hook left, lefties right). Try and keep the face of the remote facing front and not to either side–it far easier with a controller than with a bowling ball.

You can dodge though, by moving both controllers simultaneously (sort of like leaning) to the left or right. Your Mii leans and takes a step or two.

I’ve got the same problem! I’m with Jayn\_Newell – it’s definitely got something to do with twisting the controller. I usually end up compensating for it by twisting the controller the other way, because I can’t seem to hold the controller straight no matter what I do! :smack:

You twist both hands clockwise/counterclockwise, though most people find it easier just to bob left/right a little. You can also control whether your punches are high or low by twisting your hands forward/back before you punch.

Wanna bet? 😉

[Here’s a good list](http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4980099&postcount=222) of the various subtleties in Wii Sports:

> [@](#):
>
> Wii Tennis
>
> 1. Timing of when you hit the ball will position the ball on the court to the left and right.
> 2. How hard you swing will control how fast you return the ball.
> 3. You can lob the ball over the player by the net, you want to do this if they are in a good position to hit it to a hard to reach corner.
> 4. You can put an overhead spin on the ball.
> 5. You can curve the ball to the left or right with a spin.
> 6. The controls are consistently accurate.
>
> Wii Baseball
>
> 1. This game is all about the pitching and timing your swing to the different types of pitching.
> 2. How hard you bat will control how hard you hit the ball. Sometimes it is better to try not to swing hard and risk losing control of where the ball goes.
> 3. You can pitch the ball to the left or right side of the box, depending on the timing of how they then to hit the ball, it can increase the chances of them fouling out or missing.
> 4. Use a curve of screw ball base on their likeliness to early swing or late swing at the ball.
> 5. You can control the pitch speed from 60 - 100 mph this will depend on how hard you throw. Use this to throw of the batters timing. Don’t be consistantly throwing the ball at the same speed, or the batter will learn your timing.
>
> Wii bowling - I don’t think I need to explain this one, everyone seems to get it.
>
> Wii Golf
>
> 1. If you swing the wiimote properly(like a real golfer), you can consistantly gain swing strength control on the meter.
> 2. You can aim your shot by using the digital left and right pad. Use this depending on the wind direction and speed.
> 3. You can adjust your club by using the up and down pad. This will come into play when you examine your terrain and really learn how each club affects the ball direction and angle.
> 4. The terrain will change your judgement in how you hit the ball. For example, you need to consider if you are hitting the ball to a higher terrain, lower terrain, up a high, down a hill, trees in the path or rough terrain is in the path.
> 5. Sometimes, you can use the rough terrain to your advantage. For example, you might want to land on the edge of the rough to help control how far the ball will roll after it lands.
> 6. When on the Green you can use the 1 button to view its slope.
> 7. Understand the terrain is a big part of how well you will play.
>
> Wii Boxing - this is probably the hardest game to get use to. I starting to gain control of my punches, but when I first started it, I was throwing punches similar to how a new player plays fighting games, by button mashing
>
> 1. You don’t need to physically move with the controller as much as the game leads you to believe.
> 2. twist both controllers clockwise to dodge/lean right. This will also help you hit to the right
> 3. twist both controllers counter clockwise to dodge left/lean left. This will also help you hit to the left.
> 4. tilt controller forward to lower your arms and punch low.
> 5. tilt up to raise your hands to your head area and punch high.
> 6. to prevent yourself from doing the “button mashing” technique, slow down and learn to counter after a dodged attack.
> 7. Button Mashing seems to work at low level players, but when you get up to the higher level players, you need to stop button mashing, and start to dodge with good judgement. You will probably lose a lot of games at first, but it will make you a better player later on.

Oh, and for Dopers who are still looking for a Wii, gossip on the street is that the big retailers – Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, Toys 'R Us, etc. – are stockpiling them for a Sunday-morning sale. If you’re willing to get to the stores a few hours before they open, you might be able to snag one.

I’ve been theorizing this too. I asked around at Best Buy, and it seems like this is the case. I’m going to give it another try this Sunday, and if I don’t get one, I’m going to give up on it until after Christmas. It’s been stressful trying to hunt one down these last couple of weeks.

Guy at Target said they weren’t planning on restocking until after the new year.. :smack:

I got that mixed up, it curves left and I’m right-handed. It doesn’t matter much anyway, I’m focusing on Zelda and haven’t been playing Wii Sports.

Okay, there’s more to them than it first appears, but I mostly meant that they don’t have all of the aspects of the games they represent (except bowling and golf).

Zelda has a minigame that’s kind of hidden. In the fishing shop, there’s a game on a table. Look at it in first person perspective and play. It’s like those tabletop games where you have to get a marble from one end of a path to the other, and it’s very hard until you get used to it. You tilt the controller to tilt the board, and it’s a good indicator of how responsive the controller is. You have to take a very light touch.

There are a few other fun little things you can do in the fishing shop. You can go into first person and look at things like the pictures on the wall, and the girl will talk about them. If you roll into the wall in a certain place, she’ll tell you to knock it off and if you keep doing it, she’ll kick you out. She’ll let you back in if you apologize.

Got up at 5:00am on Sunday, got to Target at 5:30am, and there were already two other folks ahead of me in line. 🙂 By the time the doors opened, we had 100+ people chasing 68 Wiis.

I got mine, 🙂 but can’t open it until Christmas. ☹ At least I have an extra set of controllers and a copy of _Excite Truck_ to ensure a festive December 25th… 😉

Quick question for those playing Zelda, re: howling stones:

How do I get them to work? I found the second on on Death Mountain while in wolf form, I “activated” it by howling the right thing, and I got a message telling me to come back there when I was human. Well, I did…and nothing. I didn’t see my ‘A’ action change to ‘check’ or anything like I thought it would. I don’t see how I’m suppossed to acticate it in human form.
If it happens during game play, then yeah, it will affect the remote. But, depending on the game, it might not matter.

A game like Zelda diesn’t make as much use out of the motion sensing. The moving around is done with the control stick. An arm tick will just cause him to swing his sword randomly, or if you’re aiming the bow, the aiming cursor will move aorund a bit.

The Wii sports, on the other hand, might have a more dramaitc effect. Even slight changes in how you hold and move your hand can drastically affect where the ball goes in Wii bowling (the only one of the sports I’ve played.)

Actually I’m pretty sure it only shows on the map when you do the howl. Later on it doesn’t show on the map at all. I know I spent a lot of time wandering around one section looking for the wolf who was not marked on the map only to find that he was blocking my path out to continue.
