The new Bear Grylls [he’s the star of Man vs Wild] commercial has him eating a HUGE larvae . The Larvae is distorted in the commercial with words, but it is still squirming about. People around the world and throughout history have done it. Aristotle praised eating grasshoppers, and St. John ate locusts. The commercial in question essentially has guaranteed that I will never, ever watch that show. OTOH, whenever the producers first viewed the tape of that giant splodge of bug juice jetting out of his mouth and dripping down his face, I’m sure they knew right then and there that they’d hit it out of the park, advertising-wise. ---

I’ve previously discussed my weak stomach when it comes to eating insects (as well as my full awareness that it’s an arbitrary, culturally ingrained taboo, not anything remotely like logical) but, I have to ask: was it necessary for the dude to chomp down on a living larvae? What about a nice grilled grub? A barbecued bug? An incinerated insect? Or, if not cooked, why not at least _dead_?! ---

I love this show, and if you think that was bad you should not see the one where he fills a rattlesnake skin with his own pee, and later drinks it to demonstrate how to survive in the dessert. That boy is not right. ---

This reminds me of the Gary Larson cartoon\* where the Bear Researcher is standing in his bear suit, surrounded by suspicious bears, and one holds out a handful of grubs. The caption reads: “Oh, so you’re a REAL bear, huh? Well, then maybe you’ll like some grubs. In fact, we wanna see you CHUG them!” \*Too many of my SDMB posts start out this way. ---

Biggest creepy crawly I’ve ever seen. Could have almost field dressed the thing and then carved out a couple nice filets. ---

I highly recommend watching only the cold climate episodes. No bug-eating and he’s almost guaranteed to strip down to nothing and jump in the water - or alternately, jump in the water and then strip down to nothing - to show you what you have to do to survive that. Dude may be crazy but he’s nice to look at. Someone else said in a previous thread - Les Stroud of “Survivorman” is the kind of guy you want with you in an actual, real-life disaster. Bear Grylls is who you want if the aliens land or zombies crawl out of the grave or something like that. ---
