Is is worth buying now, even though is what, seven years old or so? Is there a better/newer alternative? I’ve scoured a few game review websites and it doesn’t look like any well-regarded flight simulators have been released lately.

I started using it about 6 months ago, and I think it’s great. There’s still an active community of modelers supporting it with add-ons, and new files are still being uploaded for things like aircraft, scenery, etc. It’s still the latest version of that series, so I don’t think it’s outdated.
