I friggin HATE Valentine’s day! I hate how you get candy, flowers, and stuffed animals. And everyone’s so happy and mushy, and everyone’s in love. I shutter to think about it. Actually, I don’t like or dislike it. I once had a boyfriend break up with me on V-day. That kind of sucked. ---

What is so bad about celebrating romance and possibly love? I like all celebrations. Even those that I don’t “believe in.” Festivals are fun. ---

Eh, it only sucks if you are alone and not in love. Otherwise it’s a nice holiday for couples and families. I just can’t stand President’s Day. I mean sheesh, we only have one president in office at a time and the rest are dead, dying or living in New York. Man it’s a horrible holiday and you don’t even get any gifts. ---

I’m not a real huge Valentine’s day fan, which is odd, because I’m really rather romantic, in a pragmatic sort of way. Last year (read - 10 months ago) I was dating a fella and he took me out on Valentine’s day and had me pick out the most wonderful cute parakeet as a Valentine’s day gift. I got the bird home, set up in a cage, happy, etc. and then the SOB (the boyfriend, not the bird) dumped me 2 days later. Great - so now I have this damn bird chirping your praises, reminding me of getting dumped 2 days after v-day. Bastard! Oh well - I still have the bird, and he’s really wonderful - substantially better than the boyfriend was, but I still really don’t like Valentines day. ---

Hating is perhaps a little too strong. But I really dislike this “mandatory love day”. Especially since it’s actually only a bussiness thing. I never offer a gift, or even a card or do anything special on this day. I know some of my gf would have liked it, but there’s no way I will buy into this “you-must-prove-your-love-today-by-buying-our-stuff-or-else-you-are-an-uncaring-SOB-so-do-like-everybody-else-does” scam. As far as I’m concerned, my feelings and the way and time I display them aren’t going to be dictated by the advertizing companies. ---

**Clairobscur** has expressed my feelings perfectly. There was only one year in my whole life that I had a boyfriend on Valentine’s Day, but his strategy was to break up with me before every gift-giving holiday, so I’ve never gotten squat from a boyfriend. Now I’m married, but my husband and I both feel the same way about Valentine’s Day. So we pretty much ignore it. ---

You could always choose a [non-celebration](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=101556) of the “holiday.” 'Course, when it comes to making up “holidays,” I think we should take our cues from the [Brazilians](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=101499). _That_ is a day I could celebrate all year 'round! ---

Y’all are forgetting, the most annoying, completely hideous, truly sickening holiday which is Sweetest Day! And I am also tired of Christmas already. I am tired of eveything commercial about Christmas, i seriously do not want anything to do with it this year. I do not know if this was brought on by September 11th, or whatever the root cause is, but, I have had it. No shopping, no wrapping, NO DECORATIONS, no nothing!! Maybe I will just hand out cards with cash in them this year. ---
