The cool part is, if you live in a blue state, you’re probably paying for Rand Rover’s stop signs!
There are many, many clues contained in this paragraph as to why curlcoat has the attitudes she does – towards (being determined to not have) children, towards education, towards anybody in poverty.
Any Freudians care to take a shot?
The other reason is that people who migrate/d from Europe and Asia tend/ed to be from higher socio-economic backgrounds prior to their arrival in the US. IOW, many are/were economic refugees who already had the financial wherewithall to leave their homelands and to start with something in their pockets when they landed on your fair shores. Poor people can’t afford the passage OUT of their misery.
You will also find that the Jewish people (and nowadays people from Asia) put high store on the value of education: when ambition and aspiration are entrenched in the culture, it makes it easier for the individual to be ambitious and to aspire to greater things. Because the blacks have had such a sordid history in the US, it’s going to take some generations for such values to develop to the point where they become the norm rather than the exception. But I am confident it will happen.
It’s an illustration of opportunity costs. It wasn’t about anyone specifically.
You might want to dial down the hostility just a trace - not everyone here is being an asshole. I am, but not everyone is. ![]()
Regards,
Shodan
Wow. When Shodan calls you hostile, that’s saying something.
Hmmm. Black people… other minorities. Black people… other minorities.
I’m sure there’s something different about black people… but I just can’t seem to put my finger on it.
There is a study somewhere suggesting that black people are following a fairly average social climb into society… provided you measure the climb up from rock bottom as started in the 1960s.
I would think that it doesn’t take a lot of luck to have not been born some congenital health condition (which I was) or to have been seriously ill prior to digging myself out of poverty. How often does it happen that those sorts of things keep people poor?
You can remember that, but not that when folks freaked out about it, I said it was a typo? I don’t remember now, but I forgot either a 1 or a 2 prior to the number I posted.
Which of course has nothing to do with what I asked, which was please quote where you have seen me say that one has to have all of the money saved up to raise a child before they have one. Apparently you cannot?
So in your world, only those who were slaves or their descendants have ever been the victims of poverty or discrimination in this country?
Which they do. Have I ever said that those things only go to the lazy? Of course not.
Shrug. Not my problem. If you choose to close your eyes and stick your fingers in your ears and go LALALALALA for fear of having your beliefs changed, then you deserve a UHC. And anything else the government wants to take from you. I don’t. And you think I’m disgusting, lazy and willfully ignorant.
Should be interesting! God knows most peoples’ ignorant assumptions so far have been…![]()
OTOH, we have all of the boat people that the western states ended up with (did the east?) that not only had no money, they didn’t speak English, nor did they understand most of our society. Including that they shouldn’t step in front of a moving car  Nowdays, the southwestern states have hundreds of thousands of Mexican immigrants, mostly illegal, who do not speak much if any English and have little in the way of skills. Yet they work their way up, such as our next door neighbor who came here 40 years ago and managed to get to middle class as well as educate two sons on a factory job.
How many more generations do you think that excuse is going to hold up? The civil war ended in 1865, so say that a human generation turns over every 20 years, we are now in generation seven. The black history in the US is so much more sordid than any other minority’s that it will take how many extra generations? How long are so many blacks going to hold themselves back by pointing to the past?
I am not being hostile, not even to those that deserve it. Shall I use more emoticons?
And put them where? They’re probably going to cost the poor, beleaguered taxpayer far more in the foster care system than they would in their welfare rat-ridden homes… and the foster care system is overburdened as it is.
Ahem.
Yes, the history of blacks in America is that much more sordid than the history of other minorities. Blacks are the only minority brought to this country as chattel slaves, and as E-Sabbath pointed out, black Americans did not enjoy the same access to resources as other minorities (to say nothing of that enjoyed by white Americans) until the mid-1960’s. If you start counting from, say, 1964, you’re talking about two generations, not seven.
Good thing you said chattel slaves, because the counterpoint is the ‘bond servant’ Irish. Who were… technically… not chattel.
What’s the longest, most viewed, most responded to Dope thread ever?
This is the biggest one I’ve seen since I started hanging about the place.
Pretty impressive.
Check out the current World of Warcraft thread. 75 pages, almost 4000 replies so far.
And in all that time, has Rand Rover yet given any of us motherfuckers any of the specified things we need?
Had to shave my own head and get my own beer. It’s this sort of lack of service that is forcing me to vote for big nanny government. They’ll get me my beer goldurnit.
Clearly, the thread title is inaccurate. This kind of trick where the OP makes shit up in the thread title has stuck in my craw for a long time.
I know the difference because I actually paid attention while attending public school on curlcoat’s (and Rand Rover’s, and **crafter_man’**s, and who knows who else’s) dime. ![]()
