I won’t repeat the “you’re already paying for other people’s insurance/healthcare” point since it’s been covered so well already.
I’ll just add that however unhappy the current conversations about healthcare/payer reform make you, John McCain’s plan was worse. Horrifying. If his plans had been carried out, we would have seen an even greater divide between the haves and have-nots. Insurance companies would have been even more free to exclude or lower the quality of coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, etc.

That’s exactly why a significant majority of the lawyers in my firm voted Obama. We are all happy to pay higher taxes just as long as you get fucked. It is worth it to us. I was there in the meeting when we discussed the benefits of a Democratics administration and the main one was fucking over inadequate pseudo-libertarians online.
Or alterntaively it could be that the large numbers of people just as wealthy, if not more so, as you who voted for Obama aren’t selfish little pricks and realize that sometimes one has to pay a little more for a better society in which to raise one’s children.

(Canadian here) Since the private sector is still running, won’t they in their infinite compassion and wisdom crush the blundering beurocratic government system? Rand should have nothing to worry about.
Also most Canadians take pride in our system (though it is flawed). I don’t think we’re moving away from it, just trying to find solutions to make it better, much like the US isn’t really moving away from privatized healthcare, just finding a solution to fill in the gaps.

I have medical care [and even if I didn’t, I spend some 32 years working and paying into the system on my own behalf, so either way, I’m covered.]

I would find it interesting too, if they were actually doing that. According to that article, however, they aren’t - they’re leaving their publicly funded system in place and allowing a for-profit supplemental system to fill the gaps.
That’s exactly the same system that is being proposed here, and is largely the same system that has been in place in the UK for decades.
ETA: Oh, and for the record, I supported Obama in the hope that Rand Rover would move to Singapore.
