Anything else you motherfuckers need?

Wouldn’t we all rather do something else with our money than buy insurance? Personally, I’d like more yarn.

Translation: curlcoat has lost track of the conversation, which has exceeded her intellectual abilities, and is now flailing about for any excuse to tuck tail and run for the Orange County hills.

No, snookums, I’m doing to work YOU into a self-righteous froth. You didn’t realize you’re playing into my hands?

I’m just waiting for incoherency to set in.

A woman after my own heart. I personally think the federal government should be able to do anything it wants and it should start giving me free skeins of Malabrigo sock yarn every time I go to the doctor. It would help my blood pressure.

You need more incoherence than she’s already giving? Damn, you ARE greedy!

OT: Sock yarns for some, lofty alpaca superbulkies for the rest!

Can anyone tell me roughly what health insurance costs the average single and/or family in the US?

'Cos I’ve heard stories that $100 pw isn’t uncommon. What’s the deal?

What does pw mean?

At my work, singles are paid for by the company. Any dependents cost the employee 50% of the premium.

Off the top of my head, I think it’s a $103/week deduction for spouse plus child(ren).
ETA: That sounds high. I can check in the morning.

With UHC, you would still be paying for it.

Sorry, pw means ‘per week’.

I was paying $54 a month for single insurance, but it was crappy coverage. I had a $2,500 deductible for doctor visits and a $1,500 deductible for prescriptions.

What’s a deductible? Is that like the amount you have to pay first before the insurance kicks in? (Called an ‘excess’ here for insurance purposes).

With UHC the cost would be spread through the system. The insurance companies cherry pick customers, then deny them the coverage they pay for. Few companies can cheat their customers so blatantly and get away with it. It is a pernicious business model and should be ended. The health of the American people should trump profits. Our fine system has us at 37th in the world.

And liberty should trump health & safety.

Yes, that’s it exactly. I would have to pay out of my own pocket for any doctor visits and tests or whatever until I’d reached $2,500. Then the insurance takes over. I’d still have co-pays, though, usually around $25 for doctor visits and prescriptions.
Having a higher deductible means you will (usually) have a lower premium.

We don’t want your liberty; we just want your taxes.

Ha! I can beat that! (have I posted this in this thread already?) We pay just over $800/month. We have a $5000 deductible. This is what my husband’s employer offers him. They pay 100% for his coverage, so the $800 is for me and our two boys. After we get to $2500, his employer kicks in 50% of the remaining deductible. This is the crappiest insurance I’ve ever had, but because insurance costs keep going up for the company, they switched to this plan in November. We’re going to try to find an individual plan this fall, but every other time we’ve investigated that, I’ve been denied due to a pre-existing condition (lupus).

Oh, and we don’t have co-pays with this plan. We pay for everything up to $2500, then 50% up to $5000.

First of all, it’s NEVER lupus. (Sorry, House joke!)

Second of all, you obviously must have done something wrong to get lupus. Anyone who can’t handle a medical emergency from savings and credit on hand is irresponsible, after all! /snark

Damn, C3, I thought *mine *was bad. That sucks.

Oh, and just to fit in, I got laid off in May, and my insurance was just cancelled a couple weeks ago, so I’m without insurance at the moment. I’ll get by for now, but if anything catastrophic happened, I’d be screwed. I’d have to apply for Medicaid.

But I called hearts so my Jack of Diamonds trumps your liberty. Also, freedom.

. . .

More and more people are “caring about my views.” And Obama is crying like a little bitch about it (i.e., “you are going to wreck my presidency!!!”).

Well, keep cryin’, bitch. Obama wants his program passed quickly because the more people have time to read it the less they like it.

Rich people are not a never-ending fount of funding for every little bullshit program that some ideologue thinks will make life better for everyone (which really means increase their power over everyone).

My side is winning. You liberal douches are losing. This bill won’t pass before the August recess, which puts its fate in very dire straits.
