Pantactic,

[Mods, I do hope you will excuse what is likely to be a cross post, I did include substantially the same apology to Pantastic, in the Gurderian / Stonewall Jackson thread.]

Here is a link to what Wikipedia has to say.

> **[Prussia and the American Civil War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prussia_and_the_American_Civil_War)**

> Preoccupied with trying to unify the various German states under its banner, Prussia did not participate in the American Civil War. However, several members of the Prussian military served as officers and enlisted men in both armies, just as numerous men who previously immigrated to the United States. Also, official military observers were sent to North America to observe the tactics of both armies, which were later studied by future military leaders of Prussia and then the unified Germany.

It appears that I principally remembered the Von Moltke quote. The Wikipedia article strongly suggests the quote is spurious.

If you are still following the Gurderian / Stonewall Jackson thread. I was wrong about the extent the Prussians / Imperial Germany studied the U.S. Civil War. I apologize for my intransigence in that regard.

Zuer-coli.
