I meant to show that the statue did not portray him as a Confederate, but as a Mason.
I don’t believe it is that simplistic.
Still with the Antifa, huh? How does a “lawless group” get arrested anyway? Also, a simple Google search for “protesters arrested” will show numerous people being arrested for protesting.
Here’s one such story.
And the propaganda from Russia.
It wouldn’t change anything, or at least not a lot. Sure, your average redneck that flies under the radar and keeps their opinions to themselves might not go, but as we’ve been seeing recently, a lot of people really aren’t shy about this stuff. We’ve seen prison guards reenacting the George Floyd murder, proudly. Just a few days ago a video surfaced of a group of white people attempting to lynch a black man in the woods. No one was hiding their face from the camera. And, I’m sure there’s countless other examples.
Better idea. You can see the statues, but there’s an admission fee and all profits go to some type of anti-racisim something. Make it more like a Holocaust Museum. A place for people to go and reflect on the atrocities that others have been through. For the same reason I assume neo-nazis don’t go to Holocaust Museums to celebrate their ancestral accomplishments, racist people probably aren’t going to head down to the Slavery/Racism museum to celebrate what their ancestors did, especially if the proceeds go towards BLM type things.
Well, since it is only when the police kill someone that the story be cynically exploited. That’s why there is silence about the rest of the rampant lawlessness.
Yes, why don’t we treat police murder just like regular murder?

And even the Masons supported removal of the statue. Perhaps the Masons were quick to overlook Pike’s egregious moral failings 100 years ago, but today’s Masons are not so inclined.
Because it can’t be politicized and exploited. I just said that.
Really? Murder, and crime in general, has never been politicized and exploited?

Okay, that’s an idea I can get behind. I was being only semi-facetious when I suggested moving the statues to a remote area and calling it “Garden of Assholes.”
But this, this is a workable idea that moves the statues from their very public areas, groups them together and perhaps labels them as a part of our racist history.
We don’t need to erase our history or rewrite it. This new venue for the statues allows us to remember our history, and learn from it.
If people take control of the situation and structure it to be a learning experience, then the white supremacist/die-hard Confederates could not use the statues as veneration objects.

I think we need to see a citation for the things that this Politico article says don’t exist.
In Germany, you won’t see neo-Nazis converging on a monument to Reinhard Heydrich or Adolf Hitler, because no such statues exist. The country long ago came to grips with the full weight of its history. But you’ll find Nazis and Klansmen in Virginia, circling a statue of Robert E. Lee, a traitor who raised arms against his own country in the defense of white supremacy.
I lived in Germany twice, and while I admit I didn’t see everything, I truly never saw a statue of Hitler.
Mr VOW (then Sgt VOW) and I traveled Southern Germany, and saw “vacation spots” created by the Nazis for the upper echelon of the government. There are many tours you can take where you are taught the history of Nazi Germany. On one of the tours, the bus stops at the location of Hitler’s home, constructed so he could have a breathtaking view of Austria. Following WW2, the new German government destoyed the house with explosives, so it could not be venerated by any remaining Nazis or current-day followers.
Mr VOW and I also visited Dachau, which is just outside of Munich. The “headquarters” building has been restored, and it is now a museum to document the atrocities at that concentration camp.
Many photographs are on display. And in every single one that showed Hitler, his face has been gouged and scratched, so it is obliterated.
Germany acknowledges her history, and chooses to remember it, and to make the conscious decision to move ahead, in the opposite direction.

What are you going on about now?
I wonder about this supposed silence when we have been discussing in other threads the coverage of things like vandalism of property, firebombing stores, etc.
I also find your priorities skewed. You are lamenting at the destruction of statues, but somehow when police kill someone without cause it is “cynical exploitation” to campaign against it.
I drove past Frederick Douglass High School this evening and wondered when someone would demand it be renamed.
After all, Douglass was a strong supporter of U.S. Grant, who at one time owned a slave.
great idea!
I’m guessing this is okay with him as well. Just one of those “Marxist” protesters.
