This is an overreaction. The ATO’s computer noticed an “unusual figure” and isn’t an AI. Furthermore the ATO is just checking.

More than that. Effective and efficient audit programs have to include randomization factors that mean that people are audited when there is little likelihood of a result. The belief that you are likely to be audited has a strong correlation with higher declared income in tax auditing.

Yeah, turned out I owed them $157.45, which I dutifully paid. I’m not sure that the $157.45 covered the wages of Peta the ATO agent who not only investigated me, but a number of other people from my company as well. Pretty sure it was a waste of everyone’s time and energy.

And yus, off to the red and dusty Pilbara on Wednesday. God knows what awaits us…at least it won’t be a tax bill.

(Just as an addendum, I don’t know whether you heard but TLD passed away a couple of months ago. Sudden, as in not expected, but apparently not entirely unexpected either if you get my drift )

Am now living on 80 acres in the Hunter Valley, working from home, and have a constant to-do list of unexpected things. I grew up suburban / coastal, so the whole rural thing has been full of surprises

Yeah, he hasn’t been a presence here on the board for some years now despite his prolific posting in earlier times. We still had occasional contact via FB. Oh NICE, what a beautiful part of the world you’re inhabiting now!!

Yeah, I’m coastal at the moment (Surf Coast Vic) going from one of the coldest parts of the country to one of the hottest! Thankfully I can take my job with me, so once Telstra gets its shit together and gives me a phone and NBN connection (I am NOT holding my breath!!) I will be back working again.

In the meantime, just hanging out in hotel apartments and watching the Food Channel.
