> Of course he was less capable. This is one of the sillier defenses of this. You really think there is the level of physical and communications security on the road as there is at the White House? Do you really think he can personally meet with politicians from all over the country as easily in Manhattan as he can in Washington? Meeting with Ambassadors? Add to that the obvious fact that Trump is also going to be “on the road” too, besides possibly splitting his time between residences.

I think you sound like the Republicans over the last eight years who incessantly complained that Obama was in New York, or Hawaii, or off golfing, instead of being at the White House.

> What **elbows** said. Trump’s decision to keep his family at Trump Tower is estimated to cost the City of New York a million dollars a day in security costs. That’s $365 million a year for the taxpayers of New York City, and over a billion dollars over the course of Trump’s term.
>
> I think that is something that the taxpayers of New York have a legitimate beef about.

And what is it you expect them to do? Exile him?

Does Trump Tower clear the skyline for the surrounding area?
Is it an especially accessible target for a 9-11 style attack?

> You know, out of things about a Trump presidency to get riled up about, “he doesn’t want to live in the White House” is pretty low on the list in my book. It’s not as if there’s a law that says he _has_ to live there, and it’s not as if he can’t do his job unless he’s in that one specific building.

However, it indicates that he has no respect at all for the office, he has no respect for anything but himself. This is the lowest level of human being who has ever been president.

I looked in Google Earth with 3D buildings turned on. There’s a couple of narrow approaches that you could come straight in but most of the buildings are more or less the same height.
Coming down at an angle, it’s fully exposed.

I’m on numerous watchlists now. Been nice knowing you all.

It is going to cost the US taxpayers millions and millions of dollars to protect him there. It shouldn’t be allowed. Millions upon millions of taxpayer dollars wasted.

I believe it’s a condo building, not rental apartments. So those who live there own their own residences (unless they’re renting from the condo owners).

And Wikipedia lists Bruce Willis and Cristiano Ronaldo among the current residents.

Trump never thought he’d actually win. He was as surprised as the rest of us.

Concerning the OP’s suggestion that the White House be turned into a homeless shelter–that’s not going to happen. The place is a public building, maintained by the [White House Historical Association](https://www.whitehousehistory.org/). It’s open for tours & used for state occasions.

The building includes an apartment for the first family. A recent _Architecture Digest_ showed how the Obamas decorated it–mixing some modern art in with the relics & adding comfy couches to some rooms. It’s hardly to Trump’s taste, but he’ll still have to spend a few nights there each week; let’s hope he holds up until his Russian Gangster style can prevail. Perhaps wifie can visit a few times to meet with the decorators.

Ivanka & her hubby are looking for a place in DC. She can be her father’s “hostess”–when she’s not working in the administration & helping run the “blind” trust.

I’ve visited the U.S. in the past and would like to do so in future, so I’d like to stress this observation is hypothetical only, but if Trump Tower is within a kilometer of other buildings of comparable or greater height, does the Secret Service have to monitor all of them for potential snipers? Does Trump’s floor have to fitted with extra-thick windows, at taxpayer expense?

I realize as a matter of practicality, if a sniper team had lots of resources and lots of patience and was willing to die in the course of fulfilling the mission, no president could ever be completely safe, but at least the White House’s local neighborhood is less conducive to this sort of thing, no?

Kilometer? How about right next door or across the street?

No problem: he’ll permanently rent several floors of his Manhattan hotel to the government on an annual lease. I can’t even imagine how many millions of dollars that will be per year. Win-win!

How is security and meetings handled for heads-of-state and other high level politicians when they visit with the UN?

1. They mostly don’t require anything like the level security that the President of the United States gets.

2. They _visit_ the UN, typically only for a few hours. They don’t live there.

3 The UN has its own campus, conveniently at the end of 42nd Street (and therefore not on the way to anywhere else). Trump Tower is a multi-use building, right in the middle of 5th Avenue. So securing someone at the UN buildings is a much less disruptive affair.
