# Apples and Orangs

I just heard an astonishing report on Quirks and Quarks (go to [Home | Quirks & Quarks with Bob McDonald | CBC Radio](http://www.cbc.ca/quirks/) and click on Listen to the latest show if you want to hear it) that says that orang utans in a number of zoos have been given I-pads and have learned to use them–with great enjoyment. Only orangs. Gorillas would ignore them and chimps would just destroy them. But orangs are curious and learn to use them.
They told a joke that if you left a screwdriver in a chimp’s cage, he destroy it, a gorilla would pretend he hadn’t seen it while an orang would go away for a couple hours and then come back and use it to get out of the cage.

Here’s a video of orangutans at the Milwaukee County Zoo using iPads.

They don’t actually give the iPads to the orangs to physically hold, but they do show videos to the apes and allow them to reach through the mesh screen to interact with various apps.

This comes as no surprise. Orangs were documented as playing [chess](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokolsky_Opening#Details) back in the 1920s. 😃
