I think I shared it in on the SD before, but I’ll tell the story of the time I April Fool’s pranked myself: Years ago on this day, I tried to prank my wife with the classic “rubber band on the kitchen sink spray nozzle handle” trick so that when you turn the tap on you get sprayed. Hours went by in which my wife had not used the kitchen sink for any reason. SO much time went by, in fact, that I completely forgot what I had done, and went to the sink to get a glass of water. My little trick worked great-- I got soaked! My wife laughed and laughed. ---

My best friend in high school was a prankster, and not just on April 1st. Eventually we lost touch with each other, and life went on. A few years ago I happened upon his obituary. It contained a lot of humor, indicating that he’d written it before his passing. The obit was published on April 1st. To this day I have no idea whether my old friend is alive or dead (my Schrödinger’s friend). ---

My math classes today have three activities: 1. [Prove that 2=1](https://www.math.toronto.edu/mathnet/falseProofs/first1eq2.html) (and that, therefore, 1=0, so if they can get everyone on Earth to send them zero dollars, they’ll be a billionaire); 2. Prove that [7 x 13 = 28](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzxVyO6cpos) 3. [Conduct a math trick similar to this one](http://mathcentral.uregina.ca/QQ/database/QQ.09.09/h/valentin1.html) (with some four-digit subtraction embedded). For the first two activities, the underlying activity is to examine the mathematical error involved (in the first case, it’s a division by zero error, and in the second, it’s an error of place value). For the third one, I explain that as a teacher I’ve gotten very good at reading subtle facial cues from children and can tell what number they’re thinking of just from their expression. “Nah, it’s just a trick,” I finally relent. “Want me to teach it to you? What you do is – oops, look at the time, class is over, have a wonderful spring break, everybody!” ---
