Here in Austin, a local rock radio station played two April Fool’s jokes that I sort of wish had been on the level. 1. In the mid-Eighties, they announced that a huge free concert was going on in the park. They used blatantly phony sound effects to make it seem as if a DJ was up in a helicopter decribing the scene. They even claimed Jimi Hendrix would be performing. There were STILL hundreds of people showing up at the park, looking for the show. 2. One year, around 1992, they pretended that a time warp had happened, and that somehow, it was 1971 at the radio station. The regular DJs were all using the kind of phony names that DJs at a free-form FM radio staion would have used in the hippie era (Zig Zag, Apache, et al.). And they were playing a lot of really LOOOONG prog rock songs, like “In the Court of the Crimson King.” I wish Hendrix WAS alive and still doing shows. And I wish there really WERE radio stations playing the long prog rock songs I used to love. ---

Unless the story itself is an April Fool’s Day joke (and it specifically denies this) then Cracked’s description of Uday Hussein’s 1998 prank has to take the prize. On April 1, 1998 he ordered Iraqi newspapers to report that economic sanctions against Iraq were being lifted and food rationing was at an end. Then Iraqis turned to page 2 and read that this was just an April Fool’s Day joke. Ha ha, just kidding, no food for you. ---

The one that’s floating around today on Doctor Who FB groups saying that David Tennant would be back to play the Doctor after Matt Smith, based on something going wrong during the regeneration that results in a “reverse regeneration.” I like Matt Smith just fine and I’m in no hurry to see him leave, but to have Tennant back after Matt steps down…mmm, yeah. 🙂 ---
