I just saw an interesting article: [Arctic sea ice coverage](http://www.foxnews.com/science/2013/09/09/arctic-sea-ice-up-60-percent-in-2013/?test=latestnews) is up 60% from last August, defying predictions that the arctic was going to be ice-free as soon as this year. 🆒

More pack ice would certainly be good news for the polar bear population, but it will be short lived.

Cool. I’ll start selling waterfront igloos then. Clearly the crisis is averted.

Glad to see such reputable scientific journals assuaging the fears of the masses.

The Bad Astronomer[debunks](http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/09/10/climate_change_sea_ice_global_cooling_and_other_nonsense.html). My favorite bit:

> [@](#):
>
> But Ed Hawkins, a U.K. climate scientist, says he explained to Rose there was no such “crisis” meeting via email and on the telephone while being interviewed by Rose for the article! This didn’t stop Rose from making the claim anyway.

The most pertinent bit:

> [@](#):
>
> In the summer of 2012 Arctic sea ice hit a record low. Given just how extreme it was, it’s not too surprising that it would not be as extreme this year.

without trying to flog a dead horse, the data can be found at:

> **[Homepage](https://nsidc.org/home)**

short answer, after the record decline of 2012, continuing the downward trend meant that there was a large positive change this year. Nothing unexpected and nothing that hasn’t happened before.

**Diceman** , what do you think of [this article](http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-23964372)?

> [@BBC News](#):
>
> During March/April - the time of year when marine floes are at their thickest - the radar spacecraft recorded just under 15,000 cu km of ice.
>
> In its three years of full operations, Cryosat has witnessed a continuing shrinkage of winter ice volume.
>
> It underlines, say scientists, the long-term decline of the floes.
>
> Thirty years ago, there were perhaps 30,000 cu km at the height of winter
