Until this thread I never knew that there were stores devoted to cupcakes.

> The new trend for many bakeries in this area though is the [whoopie pie](http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/18/dining/18whoop.html). Much to my delight. I’ve missed them ever since moving out of PA. Every year I say I’ll make a batch, and never bother. Now I can run to a few different local bakeries to get my fix, in all kids of fun and unique flavors.

I love whoopie pies. I used to eat them once a week. Then I noticed that my favorite brand, Wicked Good Whoopie Pies, was including a nutrition facts sticker on the back of the wrapper. 39g of fat in one damn whoopie pie! I don’t eat them more than once every few months now ☹

> A fad? They’ve been here in NYC for a while now. I first went to the Magnolia Bakery in 2000 (and they were there since before that.) They’re still going strong.

You know, that makes me happy. I haven’t been there in like 7 years, but I used to eat there a lot when I lived in NY. I’m glad they’re still around.

Reporting from Calgary, AB. We’ve got Crave. They’re pretty darn yummy, even if they do have way too much frosting. I had a lovely cupcake delivered to my desk today, all wrapped up in it’s own little chinese food style take-out container and ribbon, as a reward for submitting a “near miss” card to our safety department.

I’ve never seen any here, but I’m in QLD so it might be different down south. No idea they were “fad”, either. There’s a few of those “Beard Papa” style stores around, though, if that counts.

I haven’t tried the maple flavor ones that seem to be at every country store. And I think The Pie Guy makes regular-pie-sized ones.

And they have banana, chocolate, and pumpkin!

> The whole point of adults eating cupcakes is portion control. The huge ones are just an excuse to eat a much larger piece of cake than you would normally consider.

That, and I still get the little girl “squee!” feeling over eating miniature food.

Never bought a cupcake, but I’ve made a number of them. When the fad hit the recipes improved. 😃

I’ve noticed a couple closing too, so I suspect the fad of paying exorbitant prices for tiny, fairly bland cakes is now waning.

> Still a fad here in the Bay Area - 2 of my favorite cupcakeries - [Sift](http://www.siftcupcakery.com/) and [Kara’s Cupcakes](http://www.karascupcakes.com/index2.html). They aren’t cheap, but the flavors are out of this world delicious.

There’s a new Gourmet cupcake boutique right here in downtown San Jose. _Loves Cupcakes_

Not bad at all, but I can;t see how they will stay in business.

I stand corrected: I just checked my recipe book, and Gramma’s recipe for gobs does, in fact, include shortening as an ingredient in the frosting, along with butter. I’m pretty sure you can just swap out the shortening for more butter, though.

> According to my sister they’re now a fad in the UK. She wanted 40 cupcakes for her 40th birthday last week, but they were too expensive, so she got a big cake with mini cupcakes on the top. No idea why…

Yeah, they’re still a fad here. In fact I just bought 18 mini cupcakes for my kids’ sleepover tomorrow because the art of baking seems to have deserted me since I moved here. The kids think they’re great with all the pretty icing and sprinkles etc but I wish they’d spend more effort on the quality of the cake itself. All that I’ve tried have been kind of dry.

First my hunger pains are stickin’ like duct tape.
Let’s hit up Magnolia and mack on some cupcakes.
No doubt that bakery’s got all da bomb frostins.
I love those cupcakes like McAdams loves Gosling.
Two, no six, no twelve, BAKERS DOZEN.
I told you that I’m crazy for these cupcakes, cousin.

Pfft. Upstarts. The benevolent [Saint Cupcake](http://www.saintcupcake.com/) is the only true cupcake bakery in Portland.
