# Are fruitfly eggs on most fruit?

I notice that a couple of days after placing a banana peel in the garbage that fruit-flies will appear. Are the eggs already on the bananas just waiting for the fruit to become overripe and hatch?  
Is this generally a health hazard, that the eggs are all over the outside of the fruit?
