Are Hot Dogs sandwiches?

Awwww, that’s the nicest thing anybody has ever said about me here.

No, mine wasn’t lite… nor that wimpy 64 or even the robust MGD. It was based on the original High Life, which dates back to biblical times I think.

I agree with you completely!

Touche

I would interpret “hot dog sandwich” as a diagonally sliced weiner, in 3-5 pieces, in a hamburger bun or in Texas toast, with mustard, beans, or green chile inside.

You know, if there can be Vegemite sandwiches, and butter sandwiches, I suppose there can be frankfurter sandwiches. So I guess in a way they are.

(I voted for Opal.)

I would even go so far as to say one or even two wieners sliced lengthwise and placed between two slices of bread or even within a hamburger bun – and hamburgers are not sandwiches either – constitute a sandwich. But a whole wiener in a hotdog bun? That ain’t no sandwich.

Resurrecting because I saw this image of The Cube Rule of Food Identification today that indicates that hot dogs are tacos. (Also Big Macs are cake.)

Thank you! I was just about to post this! And tuna melts and Danish open face sandwiches are toast.

Burritos are calzones or sushi, depending on how they’re wrapped.

Gyoza?

It’s inconceivable that a hot dog or other sausage on bread isn’t a sandwich. I don’t consider tortillas (corn or flour) or ‘wraps’ bread so dishes made from them are not sandwiches. Buns and rolls are bread and things like burgers and Nashville hot chicken and cheesesteaks and po’ boys and McFish are undeniably sandwiches Pita is a tough one because there are a lot of varieties with the really thin ones (lavash) too close to tortilla to qualify as bread but the thicker American Greek gyros ones can approach bread-like characteristics.

It took you seven years to come up with that?

If you want to settle this once and for all, here are the contact details for the current Earl:

His voting record is here, but no bill involving the status of hot dogs seems to have come up recently.

While I agree with my past self, I have a different argument today.

Let’s say the bun to my hotdog broke. Would that fundamentally alter the nature of the dish? Would someone say “that’s no longer a hotdog?” I don’t think so.

Now the more relevant: what if the hotdog is made with a slice of bread? Sure, some people would say it’s a different dish. But I wouldn’t. To me, it tastes the same. Or, more precisely, the difference between using sliced bread and a special hotdog bun is less than simply using a different type of bun.

Similarly, what if someone used a hotdog bun with a different filling? Would that be more different than if they used a different style of bread? I would say no. Heck, there’s the sub sandwich, which uses what is essentially a longer hotdog bun. Yet I think most people still consider it a sandwich. The chains all seem to use the word “sandwich,” at least.

I would continue to argue that a hotdog (on a bun) is a type of sandwich, but just not the default type.

Shrank.

That is all.

Except that McDonalds calls their Filet-O-Fish (which is served on a burger bun) a Filet-O-Fish Sandwich. So being on a hamburger bun does not disqualify something from the sandwich category.

And it’s a good thing, too. If I’m all out of Wonder Bread and only have hamburger buns on hand, I’m sure as FUCK not making myself a peanut butter and jelly BURGER.

Peanut butter on a hamburger is a thing.

I’ve had that burger or almost that burger in Phoenix (or the area). I don’t think mine had jelly on it; I could be wrong. But it definitely had the peanut butter and bacon. It was … rich. Too much so. I also had a peanut butter, and bacon in a Twinkie (as bun), in Chandler (Phoenix suburb) about ten years ago. Here’s an image I could find of it. I present to you, the Twilly (from the now-defunct Pittsburgh Willy’s):

Mix Sriracha sauce and peanut butter. I learned that from Chefguy.

Details?

But OP yes, Hot Dogs as I think of them (sausage positioned between sliced bun) is absolutely a sandwich. I think posted upthread: there are open faced sandwiches and ice cream sandwiches…

And while we’re at it yes, ketchup belongs on a hotdog. Even if it has already been topped with chili. Yes. Just yes.
