Are liberals cat people?

I always thought that cat people were likely to be liberals, until I saw a picture of Pat Buchanan with his kitty, back in the '80s.

I for one support the right to keep and arm bears. (Don’t tell Steven Colbert.)

Conservative registered republican and certified cat magnet here. I’m also a strong proponent of the Right to Arm Bears-gives them a decent chance to fight back!

Supervillains prefer cats.

Liberal, and cats are annoying creatures. I prefer birds anyway.

Q.E.D.

I am a Republican but I am not a conservative. I am a hawk and fiscally lean conservative but I am a green and socially lean liberal. I have two cats and a dog. I lean more towards the cats.

My kitty just climbed up on the desk to chime in, in favor of cats.

I grew up in a household without pets. I have had cats for 15 years now. I have had dogs but we have been very unlucky with dogs and lost the first two before they turned four. We just adopted a new dog from a shelter a few weeks back. She is a very good dog and great with the kids.

I do see a trend towards cats in urban areas and dogs in rural. So that might be the real cause for liberals tending to befriend more cats then dogs.

Jim

Liberal dog person here. I don’t see any correlation among people I know.

I’m a liberal and a dog person.

It seems like about an even mix with the people I know.

Liberal dog lover here, but I also love cats. And at this point in my life would probably prefer to have them because I am extremely physically inactive and it would be a better life for a cat than a dog. However, I live in a house alone in a fairly poor urban area, and my 130 lb. Great Dane, Austen, coward though she is, produces a very intimidating bark, calculated to discourage neighborhood youngsters who might otherwise think breaking in was a good idea. Actually, I suspect that my 40 lb. Eskimo mix, Max, who is also very timid, would be far more likely to bite a potential intruder, but I don’t think I’m going to have to test my theory. Austen is fairly well known in the neighborhood, and she sounds scary.

Liberal with 2 dogs ,a cat and a turtle.

My first wife was a dog person and my second wife is a cat person. Both were pretty much the same politically.

I’m fairly liberal and I like both cats and dogs, depending on what cat and dog.

I am a conservative democrat and my husband is a liberal republican. We have five cats and a snake.

I don’t know if that says anything political about us, but it sure says something about our sanity.

Liberal here-and I’m a total cat person. I like dogs too-but I prefer cats.

Liberal, non-pet owning animal lover, biased toward cats but enjoy dogs as well. When I adopt a furbuddy, it’ll probably be cat first, dog later.

I want to introduce another dimension here: hardcore dog people. Breeders, handlers, trainers, show people. I get the impression they’re typically well to the right, if they have any politics at all. They operate in a world where the important values are authority, obedience, conformity to standard, and intolerance of ambiguity. They also have a heritage from well-to-do socialites and more workingclass, hunting-oriented folks, both of whom tend to be conservative.

Australian liberal here (not Liberal which is our conservative party, roughly equivalent to your Republicans in the US, but not quite so mad, just to keep things clear) and I can’t stand cats even though I have one at the moment. Just a complete waste of oxygen and other vital resources they are. All they do is miaow to be fed, eat, cuddle and dribble. That’s IT.

Dogs give you love unconditionally. Cats charge you for the privilege.

I guess I’m pretty much a godless lefty freak, yet I dearly love both cats and dogs. I grew up with both, and now exclusively own a cat only because it’s my sole four-legged-pet option, given my living arrangement. I really can’t understand folks who are just “cat people” or “dog people”. Why limit yourself? I swing both ways without effort, and find plenty to enjoy in either species.

Liberal dog person here, but I like cats as well – just never had one as a pet. I don’t think it’s so much politics, but your personality, that dictates the choice of pets. The most conservative person I know has several cats; the most liberal person I know hates cats.

I’m a dog person with a cat. Makes sense, I guess.

koeeoaddi, conflicted liberal-ish libertarian

Registered Republican/closet Libertarian. I prefer the independence of cats. I don’t have to rush home to feed or relieve them and there is never a cold wet nose poking me for attention. Dogs are great if you need a pet to with a brain but cats are the most maintenance free animal on the planet. You don’t have to bathe them and they don’t bark… EVER. And cats are generally pretty small so they’re great lap animals when reading or working on the computer.
