Are minors useless?

Almost my entire degree was useless to me after leaving university. (Degree in Geology and working as a geologist)

I would say (or at least hope) that they are important. My school just finally got minors this year. Double majoring has historically been very hard here because you’ve got to write a single thesis that satisfies both departments–which gets harder and harder the less similar the two fields are.

I’m concentrating in Social Studies, which is basically all of the social theory rolled up into one (economics, psychology, sociology, history, philosophy, etc), but I’m minoring in computer science (which, incidentally, wouldn’t have been possible if I had been required to write a joint thesis). I’ve been applying to a lot of tech internships for the summer, and somewhat surprisingly, they’ve all really liked the combination I’ve chosen. Lots of people applying to product manager positions apparently either don’t know much about tech or don’t know anything non-technical.

Here’s hoping that employers still like my concentration/minor combination next year, when I’m applying for real jobs. But if not, I feel like I will have learned a lot so it’ll be worth it either way.
