I agree with you, Daikona. But I also think that Orange juice is getting a bum rap here. If someone is having trouble losing weight, it’s unlikely orange juice is causing issue preventing that.
One needs to increase excercise, and there can be no real substitute to this. In our modern world, with some exceptions of course, fewer and fewer individuals each day are required to do less work to preform the same tasks.
We are becoming sedentary beings. This is what we get for our ‘technological progress’.
I would also recommend eating oranges (whole) instead of the juice…if you’re able.
When I bicycled regularly, hardcore, I drank about 3 quarts a day of tropicana with exta pulp. I would at times have 17, 3 quart jugs of their “not from concentrate” stuff in the fridge. It was expensive. But I sure the heck wasn’t fat. And I ate like a pig. It was great! The key to losing weight and keeping it off, is to increase calorie output and raise your metabolism with an arobic exercise program. It’s a bitch to get started on but once you’ve done in for as little as three weeks, you start to get hooked. It’s a healthy high.
It’s a shame to see people comparing sugar in soda to the sugars in fruit. And the Adkin’s diet is not healthy. Lose weight? Sure.
But your kidneys have to dump all the extra protein, which can only be stored in the body for a short time. Excess protein is a lot of work for the kidneys. It goes against longevity and good health.
The average person only needs about a quarter pound of meat per day, unless bodybuilding. It’s hard here in America to not have more meat than our body needs. I am tired of the promotion of the Adkin’s diet, which goes against what modern nutritionists have established so far. Whole grains are good for you, for example.
Exercise is the only way out and key to a healthy life. Try to incorporate some aerobic activity into your everyday lives (cycling, x-country sking, swimming - low impact activities.)
So true - I had extra tangerines (big ones) so I decided to make tangerine juice - I squeezed one thinking it would fill the glass and only got about a tablespoon of liquid!
My advice - eat the orange (as others suggested). Don’t give up fruits and vegatables for a diet, there’s nothing wrong with them. Just add them to your calorie list for the day though, and keep it under 2000, and exercise for 15-30 minutes 5 days a week.
Phlosphr, You are here-by granted approximately 2500 calories everyday.
With these 2500 calories, you are challenged daily to include a strong variety of grains, fruits, veggies and proteins. Unsaturated fats aren’t too bad, and you want to enjoy the food, and meet minimal levels for daily requirements.
Drinking one glass of OJ can probably be included, and it won’t throw off the plan.
Consuming 800 calories of OJ leaves alot of protein and other nutrients that still need to be included, yet you have only 1700 cals to pull it off.
Phil - Yeah the wife and I had this discussion this morning. We are going to eat much more healthy and count our calories. I think I get off track at night mainly. Like when I am grading papers and such I must have something next to me to eat or drink…sometimes a glass of wine, sometimes popcorn…It’s habit of association I think, but damn hard to break myself of the habit.
Yeah. Popcorn is good. I got an old fashioned type popper and some olive oil. Air poping is best but doesn’t have the flavor character that the olive oil seems to add.
If you can, try to stay away from alcohol. Alcohol not only has high caloric value, but some way (not sure how this works in the body) effects the metabolism to boot, in a way that it makes it much more difficult to shed the pounds.
