# Are Palestinians in Gaza a distinct ethnic group? Is pushing Palestinians out of Gaza "ethnic cleansing?"

What defines an “ethnic group?” (really asking)

I live in Chicago. Am I part of the ethnic group “Chicagoan?” Chicago is older than [Palestine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_Palestine) (or [Gaza Strip](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_Strip)).
